The Tennessee 1st Infantry Regiment Volunteers was organized May 9, 1861 at Nashville, Tennessee; mustered into Confederate service August 1, 1861; reorganized about May 1, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi and consolidated with the TN 27th Infantry Regiment in December of 1862. It was merged into 1st Consolidated Tennessee Regiment April, 1865; paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865. The regiment moved to Virginia, took part in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, served under T.J. Jackson, then in February, 1862, returned to Tennessee. After fighting at Shiloh and Perryville, it was assigned to Maney's and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee, and during December, 1862, was consolidated with the 27th Regiment. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesborough to Atlanta, endured Hood's winter operations in Tennessee, and ended the war in North Carolina. The Tennessee 1st Infantry Regiment (Turney's) was organized April 21 or 29, 1861. Colonel Turney reported to the Confederate War Department that his regiment was organized, although without weapons. They were mustered into Confederate service May 8, 1861 at Lynchburg, VA, then traveled by rail to Richmond where they were drilled by the cadets from the Virginia Military Institute. Organization of the Tennessee Brigade was announced on 8 Mar. 1862. The third Tennessee regiment in this brigade was always the First Tennessee Regiment, but not always the same First. The first commander of the Tennessee Brigade was Brig. General Samuel R. Anderson. His head-quarters were at Evansport, now Quantico, Virginia. On March 8, 1862, the brigade was assigned to the division of Brig. General William H.C. Whiting. Under General Anderson, the brigade entered the Peninsular Campaign as part of A.P. Hill's "Light Division" of Magruder's Corps. The regiment continued throughout the war in Virginia, surrendering at Appomattox. The Tennessee 45th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, in December, 1861. It participated in the Battle of Shiloh, was active at Baton Rouge, then served in the Jackson area. Later it was assigned to J.C. Brown's, Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. In November, 1863, it was consolidated with the 23rd Infantry Battalion. The regiment took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, moving with General Hood back into Tennessee, but it was not engaged at Franklin and Nashville. It ended the war in North Carolina. The unit sustained 112 casualties at Murfreesboro, lost forty-three percent of the 226 at Chickamauga, and reported 12 men disabled at Missionary Ridge. The 45th/23rd Battalion totaled 316 men and 340 arms in December, 1863. Few surrendered in April, 1865.

TheTennessee Thirty-first Infantry Regimentwas raised in Weakley, Haywood, Madison, McNairy and Decatur Counties, and was organized during the summer of 1861 with A. H. Bradford, colonel, and November 29 marched for Columbus, Ky., where it remained until the surrender of Fort Donelson in February, 1862. It then moved to Tiptonville, then to Fort Pillow, and, after the battle of Shiloh, to Corinth. Later it was moved to Chattanooga, and then moved north campaigning through Kentucky with Bragg. At Perryville the regiment had its first heavy engagement, displaying great gallantry and losing many valuable soldiers. Egbert E. Tansil succeeded Bradford as colonel. It marched south with the army and December 31 fought with conspicuous courage at Murfreesboro, and retreated south with the army, and in September, 1863, fought in the awful battle of Chickamauga, losing nearly half its men. In 1864, in the Georgia campaign, it was engaged in nearly all the principal battles, losing heavily in the aggregate. In the Tennessee campaign of Hood it fought at Franklin, losing over half the number engaged. Col. Stafford was killed on the enemy's line, to which he had penetrated. Again it fought at Nashville, then moved to North Carolina, where it surrendered.

The Tennessee 1st (Colms') Infantry Battalion [also called 20th Battalion] was organized at Camp Weakley, Tennessee, in January, 1862, with five companies. A regimental report dated January 21, 1864, stated that the five companies composing this battalion were organized December 9, 1861; reorganized at Camp Weakley, near Nashville on January 1, 1862; accepted into Confederate service January 6, 1862; organized into a battalion on January 26, 1862; and moved to Fort Donelson the same day, before the muster of some of the companies had been completed. A total of 997 men were enrolled from DeKalb and White counties. The 1st Infantry Battalion was one of the Confederate units captured at Fort Donelson. At Fort Donelson the battalion was not attached to any brigade. Company "A" reported 59 men and four officers surrendered and Company "E" 43 men surrendered. The Tennessee 46th Infantry Regiment was organized at Paris, Tennessee November 29, 1861; reorganized September, 1862; field consolidation with 55th (Brown's) Regiment January, 1863; remnant formed part of Fourth Consolidated Tennessee Infantry Regiment. The Regiment was commanded by Colonel Anderson Searcy. The 46th was captured at Island #10 and involved in the Siege of Vicksburg. Later it participated in the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, and the Carolina's Campaign. The Tennessee Regiments in Quarles' Brigade were not accounted for in the final reorganization of Johnston's Army on April 9, 1865, but a comparison of the names on the muster rolls shows that the remnant of the 46th Regiment was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina May 1, 1865 as part of the Fourth Consolidated Tennessee Infantry. The Tennessee 63rd Infantry Regiment [also called 74th Regiment] was organized in July, 1862. The men were from the counties of Claiborne, Roane, Washington, Knox, Hawkins, and Sullivan. It served in General Gracie's, B.R. Johnson's, and McComb's Brigade. The unit fought at Chickamauga and in the Knoxville Campaign, then joined the Army of Northern Virginia during the spring of 1864. It went on to participate in the conflict at Drewry's Bluff, the long Petersburg siege north of the James River, and the Appomattox Campaign. It lost more than fifty percent of the 404 engaged at Chickamauga, had 19 disabled at Bean's Station, and on April 8, 1864, totalled 405 men. The Tennessee 59th Infantry Regiment was organized in June, 1862, using the 1st (Eakin's) Tennessee Infantry Battalion as its nucleus. Its members were from the counties of McMinn, Monroe, Carter, Knox, Grainger, Hamblen, and Polk. For a time the unit served at Cumberland and Big Creek Gaps, then was assigned to A. W. Reynolds' Brigade, Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It fought in the Vicksburg Campaign and was captured on July 4, 1863. After being exchanged and reorganized as mounted infantry, the regiment was placed under the command of General Vaughn. It went on to take part in the operations around Knoxville and in May, 1864, an inspection report showed the 59th with 241 present.
