Hamilton Street Names

Hamilton Street Names PDF Author: Margaret Houghton
Publisher: James Lorimer & Company
ISBN: 9781550287738
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 140

Book Description
Beach Boulevard, Mud Street, Sulphur Springs Road, Paradise Road, the Jolley Cut -- street names are a vivid and living embodiment of a city's history, of the dreams, passions and workaday concerns of its citizens. Love, murder, betrayal, political intrigue -- all are present in this engaging new book about Hamilton's past. Most Hamiltonians know that MacNab Street was named after Allan Napier MacNab, a famous native son, but who were the people who gave their names to James, King or Barton streets, Fennell Avenue, or Kitty Murray Lane? Street names offer a unique, meandering path through Hamilton's fascinating past, full of curious biographical culs-de-sac and occasional sweeping historical vistas. Hamilton Street Names includes more than 120 routes in the new city. Each alphabetically organized entry offers fascinating insights into the city's social, political, cultural or military history. Richly illustrated with archival photographs, this book offers fascinating views into the past of the new Hamilton.

Sense of Place, Identity and the Revisioning of Curriculum

Sense of Place, Identity and the Revisioning of Curriculum PDF Author: Terry Locke
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9819942667
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
This book explores intersections between sense of place, the formation of identity, indigeneity and colonisation, literature and literary study, the arts, and a revisioned school curriculum for the Anthropocene. Underpinning the book is a conviction that sense of place is central to the fostering of the change of heart required to secure the survival of human life on earth. It offers a coherent overview of seemingly disparate realities on a geographically and historically sprawling canvas. The book is a work of literary non-fiction, drawing on a range of sources: literary works and criticism, theoretical research, empirical studies and artworks. Of its very nature, the book enacts an extensive cultural critique. After establishing a cross-disciplinary foundation for “sense of place”, the book describes its relationship to identity with reference to such terms as attachment, dispossession, reclamation and representation. It shows how a hopeful narrative for planet stewardship can be developed by the uptake of indigenous and traditional discourses of place. It concludes with the envisioning of a place-conscious curriculum, and ways in which an activist agenda might be pursued in the Anthropocene.
