Book Description
The United States Naval Academy is the premier source of officers for the Naval service. A Naval Academy diploma and commission into the Navy or Marine Corps requires a four-year total immersion into military culture, leadership training, and a demanding academic curriculum. The Naval Academy's unique style of leadership training prepares young men and women for service to their country is an artful combination of mental, physical, and emotional development processes. These processes culminate into a performance measure called the Military Performance grade. This research uses detailed literature reviews to support the operationalized model of the Naval Academy's midshipman development process. The model uses secondary data from the Bowman-Mehay data files for Naval Academy classes 1980 through 1985. Evaluated in this research are the outcomes of the Linear and LOGIT regressions of the fleet success measures of Officer Performance, Promotion, and Retention. This research indicates some surprising results about the role of academics, physical education, athletics, and the Military Performance grade on the development of future Naval officers. The Military Performance grade is consistently the best predictor of fleet success measures.

The Effect of a Military Family Background on Midshipmen Performance at the United States Naval Academy and USNA Graduate Performance in the Fleet

Book Description
This research analyzes USNA and fleet performance of midshipmen who come from career military family backgrounds. It is hypothesized that a military family background provides children with values that help them succeed at the Academy and in the Fleet. This thesis uses USNA classes of 1988 - 1992 to judge performance at the Academy and USNA classes of 1980 - 1985 to measure fleet performance. Performance was measured in terms of graduation rates, attrition rates and final aggregate multiples. In judging officer performance, retention rates to the LCDR boards and career promotion rates to LCDR and CDR were examined. Results suggest that a military family background may be significant in determining success at the Academy and in the Fleet. However, more research is necessary to adequately isolate the effect of a military family background.

An Analysis of the Effects of Prior Enlisted Service on Midshipman Performance, Graduation, and Fleet Retention at the U.S. Naval Acadey

Book Description
This research analyzes performance at the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) and fleet retention of midshipmen who have prior enlisted experience in the Navy and Marine Corps. It is the primary hypothesis of this study that prior enlisted experience provides these midshipmen with values and skills that help them overcome perceived academic deficiencies to be successful at the Naval Academy. Linear and non-linear LOGIT regression models are estimated to analyze the influence of prior enlisted experience on performance of USNA classes from 1990 through 1999 and on the fleet retention of graduates. The performance analysis is based on data collected by Admissions to compile USNA's Candidate Multiple with additional variables to account for attributes of each individual's prior enlisted service. USNA performance was measured in terms of leadership potential (striper selection), academics, overall class standing, and graduation rates. Officer retention is depicted by retention rates to the 0-4 promotion board. The results suggest that prior enlisted experience is significant in determining success at the Academy and fleet retention.
