Kansas City's Historic Hyde Park

Kansas City's Historic Hyde Park PDF Author: Patrick Alley
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 0738588504
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
Hyde Park, located on Westport's outskirts south of early Kansas City, was the first stop on the long trek down the Santa Fe Trail. Good pasture and a natural cave spring were early attributes. During the real estate boom of the 1880s, the area was platted, but the crash of 1888 intervened, and only a few houses were built. By 1900, with the recovery of the economy and the development of Janssen Place as a private street, the area became the preferred community for Kansas City's wealthy. The architectural style is Queen Anne, Prairie School, Neo-Georgian, Colonial Revival, Kansas City Shirtwaist, and Shingle. These homes glitter with original brass fixtures, lead and stained-glass windows, and oak, mahogany, and walnut interiors. Some of Kansas City's most famous and notorious have lived in Hyde Park, from wealthy businessmen and entertainment stars to serial killers.

Kansas City's Historic Midtown Neighborhoods

Kansas City's Historic Midtown Neighborhoods PDF Author: Mary Jo Draper
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1439650349
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
The unique character of Midtown--from Thirty-first to Fifty-fifth Streets, State Line to the Paseo--grew out of its development as the streetcar suburbs of an expanding Kansas City. As residents both rich and poor moved out of the crowded downtown area after 1880, Midtown neighborhoods were built. The first wave brought mansions to major streets such as Armour Boulevard, Troost Avenue, and Broadway Boulevard, and later a housing shortage spurred the development of Midtown's unique apartment buildings. Well-known architects and local developers created bungalows, shirtwaists, and tree-lined residential streets. Churches and schools, business districts, movie theaters, and other entertainment venues quickly followed residents in their migration to the "south side." By the 1940s, Midtown's growing residential districts had developed into today's popular neighborhoods, including Center City, Coleman Highlands, Countryside, Crestwood, Heart of Westport, Hyde Park, Manheim Park, Old Hyde Park, Plaza-Westport, Rockhill, Volker, Roanoke, South Plaza, Southmoreland, Squier Park, Sunset Hill, Troostwood, Valentine, West Plaza, and Westwood Park.

Kansas City Houses

Kansas City Houses PDF Author: Michael C. Kathrens
Publisher: Bauer and Dean Publishers
ISBN: 9780983863229
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This important study documents the rich architectural heritage of Kansas City, a booming metropolis between 1880 and 1930. The grand houses built during this time are evidence of the importance of this midwestern metropolis, which once eclipsed cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, and Denver. The forty houses featured within this book were erected by the city's leading plutocrats, including newspaper publisher William Rockhill Nelson, minerals magnate August R. Meyer, lumber baron Robert A. Long, grain merchant Herbert F. Hall., and oilman Ernest C. These men typically hired local architects, many of whom had received their training on the East Coast, but settled in Kansas City. Architects in the book include Henry F. Hoit, Louis S. Curtiss, Horace La Pierre, Edward B. Delk, Edward W. Tanner, and Mary Rockwell Hook--one of the first women to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Almost all of these houses were designed in the European and American revival styles prevelant throughout Western culture during this period, although they are distinguished by a midwestern sensibility. This survey will surprise and delight anyone interested in America's residential architecture during this time.

Historic Photos of Kansas

Historic Photos of Kansas PDF Author:
Publisher: Turner Publishing Company
ISBN: 1618583999
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 257

Book Description
Positioned in the geographic center of the contiguous 48 states, Kansas has played a vital role in the nation’s development. From its Native American roots—the state is named for the Kansa tribe—Kansas has been both eyewitness and participant to history. No state, literally or figuratively, has been more in the middle of America’s fascinating story than the Sunflower State. Culled from Library of Congress and Kansas Historical Society collections, the nearly 200 striking black-and-white images in Historic Photos of Kansas trace a progression from “Bleeding Kansas,” a period of violent struggle between free-state abolitionists and pro-slavery sympathizers, to the state’s many contributions to westward expansion, railroads, agriculture, and America at war. Although these photos speak for themselves, when combined with captions and chapter introductions, they will transport curious readers to a close-up view of Kansans helping to write history.
