Hall County in World War II

Hall County in World War II PDF Author: Glen Kyle
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 0738594016
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130

Book Description
From the Great Depression to the economic boom of the postwar years, Hall County had much in common with the rest of the country during World War II while still experiencing the war in its own way. A devastating tornado, a naval air station, growth in textile and agricultural industries, and changes in how citizens viewed the world meant that Hall County emerged from the war with a unique perspective on the possibilities for its future. Using original images of historic places and artifacts, this book tells the story of Hall County and its people during the years leading up to, during, and immediately after World War II--a time that changed the county forever and assured its central role in the development of northeast Georgia.

Beyond the Jewels and Grandeur

Beyond the Jewels and Grandeur PDF Author: Helen M. Martin
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1665501723
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 87

Book Description
After attaining approval from the governor to form a city on April 21, 1821, Gainesville, Georgia, transformed into a commercial and resort area that soon attracted a street railway. When its line was expanded in 1877, Green Street eventually became one of the most desirable places to raise a family. Even after a fire nearly destroyed the town in 1851, its determined residents persevered. In 1975, the Green Street homes were placed in the Green Street Historic District and on the National Registry. Within a fascinating presentation, Helen Martin looks beyond the jewels and grandeur to capture the past and offer a glimpse into the versatile house designs of North Green Street. Some of the homes described include the Martin–Matthews–Norton house built at (58) 393 Green Street between 1910 and 1911; the Wallace House at 417 Green Street, constructed at around 1900; and the Nalley Martin house, one of the last homes erected in 1938. Included are historical photographs and additional details regarding the twenty-five homes that fell in the name of progress. Beyond the Jewels and Grandeur is an architecture book you’ll definitely want in your bookshelf. It shares the architectural history of a beloved street in Gainesville, Georgia, as its homes and residents endured changes through both simple and challenging times.

Book Description
For more than 200 years, Gainesville, Georgia, has been the trading and business center for Northeast Georgia's mountain region. Its character dictated by rugged mountain terrain and independent, self-reliant people, Gainesville entertains a unique history quite different from the traditional plantation culture of the American South. Celebrated within these pages are the people and places of this "Queen City of the Mountains." With images culled primarily from the Hall County Library and the Archives of the State of Georgia, Gainesville: 1900-2000 captures the memories of the twentieth century on the eve of the millennium.
