Ces auteurs ne parlent pas de tiers de ton, mais ils comptent dias-sept intervalles contenus dans l'octave et quarante sons formant le diagramme general de la musique; or, d'apres leurs regles pour le nombre de quartes justes dans l'etendue de l'octave, il est evi dent que les cinq tons de cette etendue sont divises par tiers, ce qui donne quinze intervalles, et les deux demi - tons mineurs com pletent le nombre dix - sept. Ajoutons a ces autorites irrecusables les temoignages de Villoteau et de Lane, qui, apres avoir passe plusieurs annees au milieu des Arabes, declarent que leur echelle musicale est divisee par tiers de ton, et l'on verra ce que devien nent les negations de musiciens europeens qui, ne sachant rien de tout cela et ne consultant que leur sentiment, resultant d'une orga nisation differente, considerent comme impossible ce qui yest op pose.
