As the first scholarly book of its kind, this edited volume brings together educational leadership scholars and practitioners from across the country whose research focuses on the unique contributions and struggles that Latinas across the diaspora face while leading in schools and districts. The limited though growing scholarship on Latina administrators indicates their assets, particularly those rooted in their sociocultural, linguistic, and racial/ethnic backgrounds, their cultura, are undervalued in research and practice (Hernandez & Murakami, 2016; Martinez, Rivera, & Marquez, 2019; Mendez-Morse, 2000; Mendez-Morse, Murakami, Byrne-Jimenez, & Hernandez, 2015). At the same time, Latina administrators have reported challenges related to: isolation (Hernandez & Murakami, 2016), a lack of mentoring (Mendez-Morse, 2004), resistance from those who expect a more linear, hierarchical form of leadership (Gonzales, Ulloa, & Munoz, 2016), balancing varying professional and personal roles and aspirations (Murakami-Ramalho, 2008), as well as racism, sexism, and ageism (Bagula, 2016; Martinez, Marquez, Cantu, & Rocha, 2016). The impetus for this book is to acknowledge, explore, theorize, and expand our understanding of how Latinas’ success as school and district leaders is informed by such gifts, including their prioritizing of familia and communidad, relationship building, reciprocity, and advocacy, in the face of such challenges. Urban school leaders, particularly superintendents are on the frontlines for raising student achievement at all levels. The work of urban superintendents is intensive given the challenges they encounter. Research has indicated that school leaders who possess and enact skills and knowledge that support change leadership. The question, then, is this: what patterns and themes exist in the use of those attributes by female urban superintendents, to support systemic changes in their school districts. This researcher chose to look at these attributes through the lens of female urban superintendents who were members of the Council of Great City Schools, who had at least three years tenure in the district, and who had realized increased student achievement during their tenure. This study identified and described through case studies the attributes that emerged from the data. Each of the five participants were interviewed twice with questions based on the leadership attributes Reeves (2007) described, the change attributes Fullan (2009) and Knoster, Villa and Thousand (2000) identified, and the superintendent challenges described by the Texas Education Agency (2007). In addition to the interviews, biographies and vitas were collected. Other artifacts such as news articles, television interviews, district newsletters, and district websites were also reviewed. The study revealed that there were patterns and themes that emerged based on the leadership and change attributes, and the challenges urban female superintendents encountered. The leadership attributes defined by Reeves (2007) were: communication, vision, relationships, building capacity in others, access the expertise of others, and decision making. The change attributes defined by Fullan (2009) and Knoster, Villa and Thousand (2000) were: vision, skills, incentives, resources, and action plan. The implications of this study revealed that below the surface of these important attributes and challenges lay social justice issues that may first need to be addressed.

Almost twenty-one percent of public school students are Hispanic yet only 1.1% of district superintendents are Hispanic. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the experiences of all the Hispanic superintendents in New Jersey with the aim of examining how their ethnicity and race has mediated their educational and leadership experiences. Using the voices of Hispanic superintendents, this study sought to identify strategies that might lead to the recruitment and retention of Hispanic superintendents. The research questions guiding this study were: What are the experiences of Hispanic superintendents in New Jersey? How does their ethnicity shape their beliefs and practices of leadership? What do the experiences of Hispanic superintendents in New Jersey suggest for the recruitment, retention, and education of Hispanic educational leaders? A qualitative research design was employed to explore the experiences of every Hispanic superintendent in New Jersey. Two face-to-face interviews were conducted with each of the nine Hispanic superintendents in NJ. The data collected was coded deductively using Critical Race and Latino Critical theories, as well as inductively. Larger themes were constructed by looking at relations between and across coded data and in relation to the research questions. Triangulation, peer review, and member checking were used to validate the findings. The Hispanic superintendents encountered institutional racism and negative perceptions about their abilities from the time they began their schooling through their experiences as district leaders. To negotiate the inherently biased system the superintendents sought to address the inequities by becoming more resilient, building a support system of mentors and family, and working harder to prove oneself. Their racist experiences were the catalyst for their leading for social justice. This study adds to the limited research base on Hispanic leadership in public schools. To improve the retention and recruitment of Hispanic superintendents the findings of this study suggest the implementation of formalized mentoring programs, addressing diversity and equity issues in preparation programs and building a network of support through key stakeholder groups including school boards.
