Book Description
An unforgettable portrait of African elephants, featuring marvelous pictures by world-renowned nature photographers and an informative text based on eyewitness observations. The African elephant is undoubtedly the most magnificent and awe-inspiring land animal on earth, embodying the very essence and wonder of the wilderness. To celebrate these majestic creatures, Daryl and Sharna Balfour embarked on a four-year quest across the African continent to record and portray elephants in unspoiled places. This collection of zoo of their extraordinary photographs reveals the fascinating lives of elephants as never before -- their individual behavior and intriguing social relationships, as well as the enormous influence they exert on their diverse habitats. While taking these pictures, Daryl Balfour experienced a near-fatal encounter with an elephant and he describes the gripping story of this adventure, which, despite his personal ordeal, did not diminish his admiration and feelings of kinship for elephants. The narrative and captions offer more details and lore about the private lives of these singular animals. The forewords included in this book represent a range of current views concerning the intense debate about the elephant's survival and the complex issues relating to the struggle between people, wildlife, and the environment. Among the contributors are Iain Douglas-Hamilton, one of the foremost authorities on the African elephants, and Daphne Sheldrick, who has raised orphaned baby elephants in Kenya and developed an astonishing understanding of them.

Book Description
The first book by wildlife photographer and writer Larry Laverty, Power and Majesty features extraordinary images and informative text that capture the life of African elephants. The book focuses on these majestic animals and features stunning photographs from the most remote corners of Africa, from the savannahs and deserts to the rivers and jungles. The text introduces various elephant habitats, explores the magical qualities of elephants, and underscores the immense challenges they face for survival in a world dominated by humans. The photographs and information showcased in this book will help increase our appreciation and understanding of the African elephant's significant place in the animal kingdom, and Larry Laverty will be donating all of his profits to this worthy cause. Book Description
This is a reprint from 1874 originally published by Harper & Brothers, New York. From the content, arriving in Angkor: WE, whose good fortune it is to live in the nineteenth century, are accustomed to boast of the perfection and pre-eminence of our modern civilisation, of the grandeur of our attainments in Science, Art, Literature, and what not, as compared with those whom we call ancients; but still we are compelled to admit that they have far excelled our recent endeavours in many things, and notably in the Fine Arts of painting, architecture, and sculpture. We were but just looking upon a most wonderful example of the two latter, for in style and beauty of architecture, solidity of construction, and magnificent and elaborate carving and sculpture, the great Nagkon Wat has no superior, certainly no rival, standing at the present day. The first view of the ruins is almost overwhelming. One writer says, ' The ruins of Angkor are as imposing as the ruins of Thebes or Memphis, and more mysterious ;' and another — M. Mouhot — whose work we have used as a guide-book in this distant part of Siam — thinks that ' one of these temples [Nagkon Wat] — a rival to that of Solomon, and erected by some ancient Michael Angelo — mighttake an honourable place beside our most beautiful buildings. It is grander than anything left to us by Greece or Rome.' At a first sight one is most impressed with the magnitude, minute detail, high finish, and elegant proportions of this temple, and then to the bewildered beholder arise mysterious after-thoughts — who built it ? when was it built ? and where now are its builders? But it is doubtful if these questions will ever be answered. There exist no credible traditions — all is absurd fable or legend.
