The First Battle

The First Battle PDF Author: Otto J. Lehrack
Publisher: Casemate
ISBN: 1612000312
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 234

Book Description
“[A] brief but well-told and well-researched account . . . a good description of early U.S. Marine deployments to Vietnam” (HistoryNet). The First Battle is a graphic account of the Vietnam War’s first major clash. On August 18, 1965, regiment fought regiment on the Van Tuong Peninsula near the new Marine base at Chu Lai. On the American side were three battalions of Marines under the command of Col. Oscar Peatross, a hero of two previous wars. His opponent was the 1st Viet Cong Regiment commanded by Nguyen Dinh Trong, a veteran of many fights against the French and the South Vietnamese. Codenamed Operation Starlite, this action was a resounding success for the Marines, and its result was cause for great optimism about America’s future in Vietnam. Blood debt, han tu in Vietnamese, can mean revenge, debt of honor, or blood owed for blood spilled. The blood debt came into Vietnamese usage early in the war with the United States. With this battle, the Johnson Administration began compiling its own blood debt, this one to the American people. The book also looks at the ongoing conflict between the US Army and the US Marines about the methodology of the Vietnam War. With decades of experience with insurrection and rebellion, the Marines were institutionally oriented to base the struggle on pacification of the population. The Army, on the other hand, having largely trained to meet the Soviet Army on the plains of Germany, opted for search-and-destroy missions against Communist main force units. The history of the Vietnam War is littered with many “what ifs.” This may be the biggest of them.

Operation XX And Me

Operation XX And Me PDF Author: Glyndwr Phillips
Publisher: eBook Partnership
ISBN: 1839520159
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 71

Book Description
Approached by the Intelligence Force to help in the release of VIPs held by the Germans in is last year at school and the last year of World War II, Glyndwr afterwards returns to real life, looking for a job he likes and can do. Years later he is drawn back to help the Force and they offer an expected incentive. This becomes a pattern for his life. This story, written in the late 1970s, remained undiscovered until three years after the authors death in 2014. Much of it was familiar but the sections involving Operation XX were completely unknown. At first it was thought the title referred to the group of boys trained for the first operation but internet searches brought to light the double meaning of XX: 20 (in Roman numerals) and double-cross. Operation XX was set up in 1941 to use captured German spies to feed back misinformation to Germany. It eventually came under MI5. Glyndwr always questioned what choice, if any, he had in the events and the way life took him. For his family the discovery of the story raised many questions that may never be answered.

Ready? Line UP! FALL IN! And you'll fall for this timely and generous novel set on an Air Force base during the Iraq War, about an amazing teacher and the students she inspires. No one in her sixth-grade class knows quite what to make of Ms. Loupe, with her short hair, her taped square "stage" on the floor, and the interest in improvisational theatre. After all, their school is on an Air Force base--a place that values discipline more than improv. But her students soon come to love her fresh approach; and when her dear brother goes missing in Afghanistan, and Ms. Loupe herself breaks down, they band together to support their teacher. What starts as a class fundraiser expands into a nationwide effort for all injured troops, and an amazing vision of community and hope.

Operation Heartbreak

Operation Heartbreak PDF Author: Duff Cooper
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1961341034
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
A perfectly told tale of defeat and glory—and a paean to gallantry in the face of the absurd—inspired by a real-life secret mission during World War II. Orphaned in the first months of World War One, when his father is killed in action, Willie Maryington dreams only of joining the same cavalry regiment and going to the front. The Armistice dashes seventeen-year-old Willie’s plans, but not his dreams of glory, and he makes the regiment the center of his adult existence. Yet, as the years go by, Willie falls increasingly out of step, not only with civilian life, but with the modern military, where horse charges are a thing of the past, and where a gulf yawns between those who saw action and those who did not. When hostilities break out again between Germany and England, Willie has become a relic. No one could guess that he will be chosen for a mission whose outcome might well decide the course of the Second World War. Inspired by a real-life triumph of British counterintelligence (codenamed “Operation Mincemeat”), and based on classified sources, Operation Heartbreak was suppressed by the British government until 1950. A work of “jewel-like brevity and intensity” (New York Herald Tribune), it is a study in nostalgia and bewildered idealism to place beside the novels of Joseph Roth and Ford Madox Ford.

Operation Shield

Operation Shield PDF Author: Joel Shepherd
Publisher: Pyr

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 466

Book Description
Part military SF, part cyberpunk, part grand-scale space opera, and part techno-psychological thriller, the Cassandra Kresnov novels transcend the recently narrow segmentation of the science fiction genre. In 23 Years on Fire, Cassandra discovered that the technology that created her has been misused in her former home and now threatens all humanity with catastrophe. Returning home to Callay, she finds that Federation member worlds, exhausted by the previous thirty-year-war against the League, are unwilling to risk the confrontation that a solution may require. Some of these forces will go to any lengths to avoid a new conflict, including taking a sledgehammer to the Federation Constitution and threatening the removal by force of Cassandra's own branch of the Federal Security Agency. More frighteningly for Sandy, she has brought back to Callay three young children, whom she met on the mean streets of Droze, discovering maternal feelings she had not known she possessed. Can she reconcile her duty as a soldier, including what she must do as a tactician, with the dangers that those decisions will place upon her family--the one thing that has come to mean more to her than any cause she now believes in?

The Memoirs of Allen Oldfather Whipple

The Memoirs of Allen Oldfather Whipple PDF Author: Allen Oldfather Whipple
Publisher: Tfm Publishing
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 244

Book Description
To the abdominal surgeon a first successful Whipple procedure is what a first combat mission is to the fighter pilot: a symbol of competence - the fruits of prolonged training. Not many surgeons have managed to incorporate their names into a commonly used eponym; Allen Whipple did and so became immortalized as a household name to surgeons worldwide. Yet, little has been known and written about Whipple, the great American surgeon - the person and his other interests. This book is an edited version of Whipple's previously unpublished memories. In these pages the retired Whipple describes the journey of his life from the very beginning in Persia, where he was born, to the very end in New Jersey where he died. He provides snap shots of himself, his family and friends, his colleagues, and the changing times in which he lived.
