The Parent Trap

The Parent Trap PDF Author: Nate G. Hilger
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 026236901X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
How parents have been set up to fail, and why helping them succeed is the key to achieving a fair and prosperous society. Few people realize that raising children is the single largest industry in the United States. Yet this vital work receives little political support, and its primary workers—parents—labor in isolation. If they ask for help, they are made to feel inadequate; there is no centralized organization to represent their interests; and there is virtually nothing spent on research and development to help them achieve their goals. It’s almost as if parents are set up to fail—and the result is lost opportunities that limit children’s success and make us all worse off. In The Parent Trap, Nate Hilger combines cutting-edge social science research, revealing historical case studies, and on-the-ground investigation to recast parenting as the hidden crucible of inequality. Parents are expected not only to care for their children but to help them develop the skills they will need to thrive in today’s socioeconomic reality—but most parents, including even the most caring parents on the planet, are not trained in skill development and lack the resources to get help. How do we fix this? The solution, Hilger argues, is to ask less of parents, not more. America should consider child development a public investment with a monumental payoff. We need a program like Medicare—call it Familycare—to drive this investment. To make it happen, parents need to organize to wield their political power on behalf of children—who will always be the largest bloc of disenfranchised people in this country. The Parent Trap exposes the true costs of our society’s unrealistic expectations around parenting and lays out a profoundly hopeful blueprint for reform.

From Classical to Modern Chemistry

From Classical to Modern Chemistry PDF Author: Peter J. T. Morris
Publisher: Royal Society of Chemistry
ISBN: 9780854044795
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
Most chemists today have either taken part in, or been affected by, the chemical revolution that has taken place over the course of the last century. Developments in instrumentation have changed not just what chemists do, but also how they think about chemistry. New and exciting areas of previously inaccessible research have been opened up as a direct result of this revolution. This is the first book to examine this instrumental revolution and goes on to assess the impact on chemical practice in areas ranging from organic chemistry and biochemistry to environmental analysis and process control, thus demonstrating how fundamental and extensive are the changes that have occurred. With contributions from internationally recognised specialists, this lavishly illustrated book provides a focal point for any historian of chemistry or chemist with an interest in this fascinating topic. This book is published in association with the Science Museum, London, UK and the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Philadelphia.

IR

IR PDF Author: Nelson L. Alpert
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468481606
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 509

Book Description
The first edition of this text was written primarily by one of the present authors (HAS), with a chapter on instrumentation contributed by a second (NLA). The volume was well received, and to keep the text up-to-date a second edition was planned. For this second edition, a third author (WEK) was invited, whose background complemented that of the other two. Each of the authors was assigned several chapters as his primary task while the complete manuscript remained the second ary responsibility of all three. It is hoped that this approach has resulted in a work that is even more thorough than the first edition in covering the basic concepts of infrared spectroscopy. NELSON L. ALPERT WILLIAM E. KEISER HERMAN A. SZYMANSKI v PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION My experience with the many infrared spectroscopy institutes held at Canisius College and many discussions with both beginners and experienced practitioners in infrared spectroscopy have convinced me that there is a need for an introductory text devoted entirely to infrared spectroscopy, a text which can be utilized even by those who approach this study with only a limited background. This volume sprang from that conviction. It is intended for all who wish to use infrared spec troscopy in research - especially chemists doing structural work - in routine control work, in industrial development, or in medical appli cations or those military applications where it is employed as an analytical tool.

Atomic-Absorption Spectrophotometry

Atomic-Absorption Spectrophotometry PDF Author: W. T. Elwell
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483160130
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 155

Book Description
Analytical Chemistry, Second Edition, Volume 6: Atomic-Absorption Spectrophotometry focuses on the use of atomic absorption spectrophotometry as an analytical technique. This book discusses the developments in the analytical fields of atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. Organized into seven chapters, this edition starts with an overview of the fundamental principles underlying atomic-absorption spectra. This book then describes the use of high-temperature fuel-rich flames that allow the determination of some elements that were not previously capable of being determined by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry. Other chapters explore the advantages of improved instrumentation and consider the atomic-absorption procedures that have been applied to a wide variety of samples from agricultural and biological materials. This book discusses as well the determination of specified elements by a direct examination of the sample solution. The final chapter provides a list of instruments that are commercially available, with emphasis on their characteristics. This book is a valuable resource for analysts, physicists, and chemists.
