Excerpt from Highways Byways in Literature "There is no trace in literature of what we now understand by the word 'love' earlier than the end of the fourth century B.C." So wrote the late Mr E. F. M. Benecke in the posthumous "Fragment printed for the Use of Scholars," entitled Antimachus of Colophon and the Position of Women in Greek Poetry. The object of the work is to prove the proposition contained in the sentence quoted, and to suggest that love in its modern sense was introduced into literature by Antimachus. What Antimachus did or did not do is hard to say, for practically all that remains of him is half a dozen lines from an elegy; some sixty scattered lines from his epic, the Thebais; and a charming little epigram in the Greek Anthology. Two other epigrams speak of him as next to Homer in poetic rank, and several authors, among them Cicero, Plutarch, and Quintilian, allude to him. Mr Benecke, however, like other English scholars, was not deterred by the scantiness of his materials from undertaking to spin a very big theory. Excerpt from Highways and Byways in the Border In preparing a second edition of "Highways and Byways in The Border," I cannot refrain from acknowledging with deep appreciation the very great compliment that has been paid to me by the many kindly critics who, when reviewing the book, selected for commendation, as being "characteristically Andrew Lang," passages of which at least ninety per cent, were not written till many months after my brother's death, and none of which he ever saw. On the other hand, a certain number of sentences that came from his pen have been ascribed to me. As a matter of fact, something less than one-tenth of the book is by my brother, and we never had the opportunity of going over together the little that was written prior to his death; nor did he ever see any of the MS. except that portion which came from his own pen. I have been taken to task for careless spelling of the surname Elliot. It is not always easy to say to which branch of the great Border clan a particular individual may belong; but if one may judge from the familiar old rhyme, I do not think I have gone greatly astray. Excerpt from Highways and Byways of the South Yet I cannot say that Florida on closer acquaintance seemed quite worthy of its name; for if you would have a profusion of flowers, you must nurse and coax them. They are not such a spontaneous product of the climate as one would expect. The soil is too poor, and nowhere did the blossoms brighten and gladden the earth as our spring flowers do in the North. Indeed, the aspect of the country is for the most part rather monotonously sober - an unending, sandy level overspread with pine woods, and a low, spiny under growth of palmetto scrub. After leaving Jacksonville, where I had disembarked, I first of all visited St. Augustine, and saw its ancient fort and massive city gateway. The fort is of genuine mediaeval type, the only one of its kind in America. Its gray, weatherworn stones proclaim its great age, the rooms are satisfactorily gloomy and dungeon-like, and you can trace the course of the old moat round about. Both the fort and the gateway date back to the time when St. Augustine was a Spanish walled town. The place itself has one or two curious narrow thorough fares and odd survivals of bygone architecture, but its prevailing characteristics are those of a fashionable pleasure resort. All the open fields on the outskirts have been taken possession of by the golf-players. Once, when I had stopped to watch a game, an old colored man came along and leaned over the picket fence near me. I want to see what they gwine do, he said. Good gracious alive!
