The High Representative and EU Foreign Policy Integration

The High Representative and EU Foreign Policy Integration PDF Author: Maria Giulia Amadio Viceré
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319766147
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
Adopting a broad conceptualization of foreign and security policy, the book examines the role of the High Representative as chair of the Foreign Affairs Council and in her/his capacity as Vice President of the European Commission to assess different patterns of integrated efforts in EU foreign and security policies. In this way, it presents a new perspective from which institutional practices in this specific area can be examined. This contribution is particularly valuable for scholars and students of EU foreign and security policy; of external relations of the EU; of international relations more in general; and of EU integration and politics. At the same time, the book contributes to the empirical understanding of two EU policies that have recently been at the centre of the debate among scholars, policy analysts and practitioners, namely the EU enlargement towards the Western Balkans and the EU Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership.

The High Representative for the EU Foreign and Security Policy

The High Representative for the EU Foreign and Security Policy PDF Author: Gisela Müller-Brandeck
Publisher: Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft

Category : European Union countries

Book Description
In 1999, the European Union appointed its first High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), as part of an effort to provide Europe with a more pronounced profile and greater voice in world affairs. This book undertakes the first systematic examination of this important office, within the framework of CFSP governance. By considering the topic from various perspectives, it explores the ways in which the first appointee to the position - Javier Solana - shaped and expanded the role of his new office. The contributions examine the structures and services that Solana put in place, as well as his (at times) contentious relationship with other central players in CFSP. It also investigates what international role Solana sought for the EU and where he placed his political and regional priorities. Solana's accomplishments are the standard by which his successor will be measured now that the office has been fundamentally enhanced through the Treaty of Lisbon. (Series: Staat

The Lisbon Treaty

The Lisbon Treaty PDF Author: Stefan Griller
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783211094280
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 383

Book Description
Immediately after the rejection of the Constitutional Treaty in France and in the Netherlands, I was tempted not to comply with a contract according to which I was expected to write on the Eu- pean Constitution within a very close deadline. “What is the sense of it now?” I tried to argue. “I cannot be obliged by a contract wi- out an object”. I was wrong at that time and we would be equally wrong now, should we read the Irish vote on the Lisbon Treaty and the Lisbon Treaty itself as the dead end for European constitutionalism. Let us never forget that the text rejected in May 2005 was not the founding act of such constitutionalism. To the contrary, it was nothing more than a remarkable passage in a long history of constitutional dev- opments that have been occurring since the early years of the Eu- pean Community. All of us know that the Court of Justice spoke of a European constitutional order already in 1964, when the primacy of Community law was asserted in the areas conferred from the States to the European jurisdiction. We also know that in the pre- ous year the Court had read in the Treaty the justiciable right of any European citizen to challenge her own national State for omitted or distorted compliance with European rules.

American Reboot

American Reboot PDF Author: Will Hurd
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1982160705
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
From former Republican Congressman and CIA Officer Will Hurd, a bold political playbook for America rooted in the timeless ideals of bipartisanship, inclusivity, and democratic values. It's getting harder to get big things done in America. The gears of our democracy have been mucked up by political nonsense. To meet the era-defining challenges of the 21st century, our country needs a reboot. In American Reboot, Hurd, called "the future of the GOP" by Politico, provides a clear-eyed path forward for America grounded by what Hurd calls pragmatic idealism--a concept forged from enduring American values to achieve what is actually achievable. Hurd takes on five seismic problems facing a country in crisis: the Republican Party's failure to present a principled vision for the future; the lack of honest leadership in Washington, DC; income inequality that threatens the livelihood of millions of Americans; US economic and military dominance that is no longer guaranteed; and how technological change in the next thirty years will make the advancements of the last thirty years look trivial. Hurd has seen these challenges up close. A child of interracial parents in South Texas, Hurd survived the back alleys of dangerous places as a CIA officer. He carried that experience into three terms in Congress, where he was, for a time, the House's only Black Republican, representing a 71 percent Latino swing district in Texas that runs along 820 miles of US-Mexico border. As a cyber security executive and innovation crusader, Hurd has worked with entrepreneurs on the cutting edge of technology to anticipate the shockwaves of the future. Hurd draws on his remarkable experience to present an inspiring guide for America. He outlines how the Republican party can look like America by appealing to the middle, not the edges. He maps out how leaders should inspire rather than fearmonger. He forges a domestic policy based on the idea that prosperity should be a product of empowering people, not the government. He articulates a foreign policy where our enemies fear us and our friends love us. And lastly, he charts a forceful path forward for America's technological future. We all know we can do better. It's time to hit "ctrl alt del" and start the American Reboot.
