Book Description
A surface ionization-diffusion-type ionization source that uses a rhenium filament overplated with platinum has been developed and optimized for 0.5- to 2-ng plutonium samples. This source is capable of measuring the /sup 240/Pu//sup 239/Pu atom ratio in nuclear-test-debris samples to 0.15% precision and accuracy at the 95% confidence level.

Book Description
Techniques have been developed which permit rapid, high-precision analyses of uranium and plutonium by multiple-filament thermal ionization mass spectrometry utilizing a commercial multicollector instrument. The salient feature of the method is volatilization of the entire sample while simultaneously integrating the signal from each isotope, thus virtually eliminating the effects of isotope fractionation in the evaporation process. The method permits the analysis of samples much smaller than required for conventional techniques using Faraday collectors and is expected to have application in the analysis of many elements in addition to uranium and plutonium. A New One-detector Analysis Method for Rapid High Precision Plutonium Isotopic Measurements

Book Description
A new method has been developed that achieves plutonium isotopic analysis precisions of better than 2% in counting times of only a few minutes, using only the 59- to 208-keV energy region of a spectrum. This breakthrough was achieved by developing a unique but highly accurate method for delineating the overall ''intrinsic'' efficiency curve, including the plutonium K-shell absorption discontinuity at 121 keV. Consequently, the measured 129- and 148-keV peak intensities can now be used to reliably determine the relative abundances of 239Pu and 241Pu. The intense 94- to 104-keV region is also analyzed, providing accurate data for the other isotopes of interest. 5 refs., 3 figs., 2 tabs.

High-resolution Gamma-ray Isotopic Measurements of Uranium Plutonium Samples at IPPE in Support of Physical Inventory Taking Activities

Book Description
Measurement of various U and Pu samples by gamma-ray spectrometry were performed at the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering to support physical-inventory-taking activities under the Joint US-Russian MPC and A Program. The resulting data was analyzed by several different methods which included Canberra's MGA9.63 (Pu and MOX analysis) and MGAU (U analysis), EG and G Ortec's MGA++ (Pu and MOX analysis) and U235 (U analysis), and FRAM v2.2 (U and Pu analysis) provided by Los Alamos. The results indicate that all of these codes are capable of performing the isotopic analysis adequately. However, some additional modifications may be required to permit better measurement of some of the more unusual components in the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE) inventory to meet the demands of inventory-taking activities.

Book Description
In this study, we re-analyzed late-1940's, Manhattan Project era Plutonium-rich sludge samples recovered from the "General's Tanks" located within the nation's oldest Plutonium processing facility, Technical Area 21. These samples were initially characterized by lower accuracy, and lower precision mass spectrometric techniques. We report here information that was previously not discernable: the two tanks contain isotopically distinct Pu not only for the major (i.e., 240Pu, 239Pu) but trace (238Pu,241Pu, 242Pu) isotopes. Revised isotopics slightly changed the calculated 241Am-241Pu model ages and interpretations.

Isotopic Analysis of Low-Activity Plutonium Samples Using High-Resolution Alpha and Photon Spectroscopy

Isotopic Analysis of Low-Activity Plutonium Samples Using High-Resolution Alpha and Photon Spectroscopy PDF Author: Jack L. Strickland

Languages : en
Pages : 85

Book Description
High-resolution alpha particle and photon spectroscopy is applied to determining the ratios of 239Pu and 240Pu in isotopically mixed samples of less than a few thousand DPM. The utility of alpha-gamma coincidence and L-shell x-ray spectroscopy methods are explored. Experimental equipment, procedures and calibration methods are discussed. Minimum sample activities necessary for quantification are presented for each method. Instrumental and statistical uncertainties prevented reliable determination of isotopic ratios. Improvements in equipment are recommended to reduce uncertainties. (Author).
