Albert Ball VC
Author: Colin Pengelly
Publisher: Casemate Publishers
ISBN: 1848849788
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
An action-packed military biography of a British fighter pilot and his rise through ranks during World War I. World War I pilot Albert Ball’s invincible courage and determination made him a legend not only in Britain but also amongst his enemies, to whom the sight of his lone Nieuport Scout brought fear. Ball enlisted in the British army in 1914 with the 2/7th Battalion (Robin Hoods) of the Sherwood Foresters, Notts, and Derby Regiment. By October, 1914, he had reached the rank of Sergeant and then became Second-Lieutenant to his own battalion in the same month. In June, 1915, he trained as a pilot in Hendon. Then in October, he obtained Royal Aero Club Certificate and was transferred to the Royal Flying Corps. He further trained at Norwich and Upavon, being awarded the pilot’s brevet in January, 1916. In May, he opened his score, shooting down an Albatros C-type over Beaumont. Days later he shot down two LVG C-types, while flying his Nieuport 5173. Captain Albert Ball made his final flight on May 7, 1917, when he flew as part of an eleven-strong hunting patrol into action against Jagdstaffel 11, led by Lothar Von Richthofen. Albert was pursuing the Albatros Scout of Lothar, who crash-landed, wounded. Then many witnessed Albert dive out of a cloud and crash. He died minutes later in the arms of a French girl, Madame Cecille Deloffre. Ball rose from obscurity to the top rank of contemporary fighter pilots in only 15 months. In that period, he had been awarded the MC, DSO, and two Bars, and was credited with at least 44 victories.

The Empty Book
Author: Josefina Vicens
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 168
Book Description
"It's a lot easier just not to write." So argues Josefina Vicens' alter ego, Jose Garcfa, in The Empty Book. Yet his need to write exists independently of his perception that an "ordinary" person has "nothing to say." In the very act of writing about "nothing," Garcia paradoxically tells a story that does have meaning and significance--the story of his own attempt to transcend the limits of mundane existence through creative work.Winner of the prestigious Xavier Villaurrutia prize, The Empty Book was first published in Mexico as El libro vacfo in 1958. A novel about the writing process, it stands as a forerunner of the metafiction boom of the 1960s that included the works of such writers as Cortazar, Pacheco, and Elizondo. The accessibility of its language and themes makes this novel highly democratic and empowering, rescuing literature from the realm of high art and opening it to participation by "ordinary" people.A novel for everyone interested in the process of writing--and not writing-- The Empty Book presents a novelist who deserves to be much better known by English-language readers. Josefina Vicens (1915-1988) was a noted Mexican screenwriter and author of a second novel, Los anos falsos. David Lauer is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Spanish and Portuguese at Stanford University.

Running on Empty
Author: Jonice Webb
Publisher: Morgan James Publishing
ISBN: 161448242X
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 250
Book Description
A large segment of the population struggles with feelings of being detached from themselves and their loved ones. They feel flawed, and blame themselves. Running on Empty will help them realize that they're suffering not because of something that happened to them in childhood, but because of something that didn't happen. It's the white space in their family picture, the background rather than the foreground. This will be the first self-help book to bring this invisible force to light, educate people about it, and teach them how to overcome it.
