Book Description
Excerpt from High-Efficiency Electrical Illuminants and Illumination The author has been induced to prepare this little vol ume by the constant demand of layman and engineer alike, for information on the principles of the new light sources, their manufacture, use, care, and handling. The volume is necessarily largely didactic, and in prepar ing it the aim has been to make it intelligible to the serious general reader as well as useful as a reference to the central station man of progressive ideas. The book does not claim to be exhaustive, nor does it purport to more than generalize on the proper use of the new illuminants for various conditions of lighting, interior and exterior. The Art of Illumination (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Louis Bell
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780260599728
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 362

Book Description
Excerpt from The Art of Illumination Since the first edition of this book was published profound and revolutionary changes have taken place in the available materials of artificial illumination. Among electrical illuminants entirely new types of are light have come into general use, and the carbon incandescent lamp is being rapidly pushed into obsolescence by the metallic filament lamps which now dominate electric lighting practice. In the field of gas lighting, the inverted mantle burners of both large and small capacity, and the high pressure mantle burners, have pushed their way to the front and radically changed the conditions of economy which previously existed. Auxiliaries of every kind, and particularly shades and reflectors of greatly im proved types, have been so multiplied as to meet almost every possible requirement. All these considerations have made necos sary a very complete revision of the parts of this volume dealing with practical lighting. Moreover, the art of illuminating engi neering has been enriched by a large amount of valuable experience within the past few years, and its principles are now founded on a more secure scientific basis. The general principles of the art, however, remain the same and its importance in practical life is at last being adequately appreciated. Electric Lighting (Classic Reprint)

Electric Lighting (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Olin Jerome Ferguson

ISBN: 9781332534548
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Excerpt from Electric Lighting Next to the human need for food, shelter and clothing, comes the need for artificial light. The meeting of this requirement, upon a large scale, becomes an engineering proposition and electric lighting stands prime among various agencies used therefor, when illuminants are classified according to their effectiveness, adaptability, flexibility and efficiency. There are few engineering activities which have advanced more rapidly during the last few years than have the art and practice of electric lighting. Illuminants have been steadily improved and refined. New types of lamps have been developed giving better colors of light, more efficient light production, cheaper units and a greater range of sizes. Principles of illumination have been studied and applied in the better solution of lighting problems. Indirect lighting, semior complete, has introduced great possibilities into the handling of both small and large installations. The economic value of good lighting is better appreciated. Color is beginning to play an important part in lighting schemes. It is destined to become even more widely utilized. There are excellent books which satisfactorily cover certain portions of the field which is understood to be included by the term "Electric Lighting." Generally speaking, however, they emphasize some one phase of the subject, to the partial exclusion of other equally worthy considerations. This limits their usefulness as text-books and it has been the aim of the author to meet the need in this particular by the production of a well-balanced presentation of fundamentals, with principles and practice appearing through the whole work. It is not thought necessary to make this treatise a voluminous one. Those users who desire more subject matter will find unlimited amounts of it in the sources which are frequently cited in the references made. Lighting by Acetylene

Lighting by Acetylene PDF Author: Frederick Dye

Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 202

Book Description
Excerpt from Lighting by Acetylene: A Treatise for the Practical Lighting Engineer, Containing Elementary Information and Details for Those About to Take Up the Work There is not the least doubt now about Acetylene Gas being commercially applicable to the many purposes for which artificial light is needed, particularly in places where coal gas and electricity are unavailable and only oil illumination otherwise possible. It can now be said quite positively that this gas is the light of the future for country houses and works, unless, of course, some thing better' and cheaper should be devised, which is very unlikely. Acetylene can now be made (given a proper gene rator) bya lad or any unskilled person, without super 'vision and with no risk; and it can be had at a cost that compares equally With coal gas at about 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet for a given candle-power or brilliancy of illumination. This is after allowing for wear and tear and interest on outlay. Should the present price of carbide go down, or should its gas-yielding qualities be increased, then acetylene will compare, of course, more favourably still. 'acetylene. The present cost of the gas, however, is no obstacle to its free adoption, for it is' in very few country places that coal gas costs less than 3s. 6d. Per thousand feet, and in many districts it exceeds this greatly. Probably most people would rather pay a little more for coal gas supplied by a gas company, as the trouble of making the acetylene, small as it is or should be, is still a trouble, and the outlay for the apparatus has to be considered. Therefore acetylene is unlikely to displace coal gas where the latter exists but it is already a possible and strong rival to coal gas if it should be a question of which gas plant shall be laid down to light a village. For single-residence plants acetylene has nothing to fear from coal' gas, neither need it fear much from gasoline, which is dirty, ill - smelling and expensive in compari son with the later illuminant. Gasoline is also more dangerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
