"Prior research into English as a second language (ESL) has largely focused on barriers and poor performance rather than success and high achievement (e.g., Buttaro, 2004). This study explored demographic and motivational characteristics associated with high achievement among a diverse group of adult immigrant ESL students at a community college in northern California. Using quantitative data from a survey and qualitative data from interviews, results from high achieving and medium achieving students were compared. The study found that the high achievers had stronger self-efficacy and were more integratively, extrinsically, and intrinsically motivated to learn English than the medium achievers, although the margins of difference were small. Results may support better understanding of high achievement factors by ESL teachers, administrators, and curriculum designers and help them encourage greater achievement by lower performing students. Limitations of scope and methodology suggest that further research is warranted." -- Abstract, p. 1.

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has accumulated substantial tradition in practice, research and theory. It is a common approach in English Language Teaching (ELT) among adults today, starting with high schools, then in academia, pre and in-service training, and life-long learning programs. The role of ESP in each of these is to facilitate work in today’s inevitably international business and scientific environment. It provides language training based on the precise simulation of communicative situations found in the surroundings for which learners are preparing, including, for example, domain specific vocabulary, syntactic and morphological structures, text and speech content structuring, stylistics, intercultural competence. At present, when English is present either as a foreign or second language, learning General English (GE) is to a large degree accomplished before learners start needing English for their jobs. In this way, ESP does not complete GE, but builds upon the foundations laid by it in learners’ prior education. ESP is a channel of communication for the contemporary academia and economics. However, even so, these are still early days for ESP, as it does not yet have a recognised place within academia. In order to offer a satisfactory response to this key issue, SLA researchers have posited the existence of a set of individual factors of a very different nature, such as aptitude, motivation, attitude, personality, and intelligence, among others, that might explain such variation. However, one of the most obvious potential explanations for the lack of success of L2 learners compared to L1 learners is that the acquisition of a foreign language begins at a later age than that of the mother tongue does. Thus, it has been prevalently assumed that age itself is a predictor of second language proficiency. This paper focuses on research which has been carried out on maturational constraints for SLA and hereby tries to find answers to various questions concerning age as a factor in SLA.
