La modelación numérica del flujo en lámina libre es una herramienta cada vez más utilizada y con un creciente abanico de posibles aplicaciones. HEC-RAS es un modelo numérico en continuo desarrollo, aplicable en el ámbito de la ingeniería hidráulica y fluvial, con una gran aceptación por parte de la administración pública. Mediante la aplicación del modelo a casos reales, se presentan las bases teóricas esenciales (conceptos de régimen lento, régimen rápido, resalto, etc.), el funcionamiento general del programa (elaboración de un proyecto, creación de geometrías, gestión de planes, etc.), los aspectos clave a considerar en su ejecución (establecimiento de las condiciones de contorno, espaciamiento entre secciones, rugosidad, etc.), al tiempo que se trabaja también con elementos singulares (puentes, encauzamientos, pasos entubados bajo vía, etc.).
