J.C. Baud was de langst dienende minister onder koning Willem II (1840-1849). Hij stond aan het hoofd van het Departement van Koloniën, dat van cruciale betekenis was voor het herstel van de overheidsfinanciën. Het was de tijd waarin de Nederlandse staat nagenoeg bankroet was en slechts op de been werd gehouden door de koloniale baten die op Java met het Cultuurstelsel werden verkregen. Kort na de troonsbestijging van Willem II begon Baud aantekening te houden van de wekelijkse gesprekken die hij met de koning voerde over het koloniale beleid en ook over de binnenlandse politiek, in het bijzonder de herziening van de grondwet. Baud heeft deze aantekeningen tot het einde van zijn ministerschap volgehouden. Zo ontstond een uniek document dat nagenoeg het hele koningschap van Willem II beslaat, namelijk de periode van januari 1841 tot maart 1848. De vijf kleine boekjes waarin Baud zijn aantekeningen maakte, zijn altijd in familiebezit gebleven en hebben daar decennia lang een onzichtbaar bestaan geleid. Door het vaak onleesbare handschrift was het niet eenvoudig om de aantekeningen op juiste waarde te schatten. Systematische studie met aanvullende toelichting heeft van een reeks fragmentarische notities een spannend politiek verhaal gemaakt. Dit boek werpt niet alleen een nieuw licht op het omstreden koningschap van Willem II, maar gunt de lezer ook een blik in het politieke besluitvormingproces gedurende een periode waarin nog geen sprake was van volledige ministeriële verantwoordelijkheid. Bij het herstel van het Nederlandse gezag over de kolonie Curaçao in 1816, kwam een nieuw garnizoen van meer dan 350 militairen uit Europa op Curaçao aan. Een van de officieren was de twintigjarige kapitein R.F. van Raders. Bijna dertig jaar lang bleef hij werkzaam op het eiland: eerst als garnizoensofficier, daarna als adjudant van de gouverneur en vervolgens als garnizoenscommandant. "Sugar, Steam and Steel is about cane sugar and the transformation of an Indonesian island into the 'Oriental Cuba' during the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Between the 1830s and the 1880s, sweetener manufacture in Dutch-controlled Java - the crown jewel of the erstwhile Netherlands Indies - drew decisively away in matters of technology and sugar science from other Asian centres of production which had once equaled or, more often, surpassed it in terms of both output and know-how. Along with its larger and altogether more famous Caribbean counterpart, Java's industry came to occupy a position at the apex of the trade in what had become by this date a key global commodity. Along with the beet sugar producers of (post-1870) Imperial Germany, Cuba and Java accounted for a little over one-third of the world's recorded output of the industrially manufactured kind of sugar usually referred to as 'centrifugal'. While Cuba held the position of the world's largest supplier of cane sugar to international commodity markets, 'Dutch' Java emerged from almost nowhere to take second place. The island had begun the nineteenth century as one of a number of centres - in fact, a rather minor one - of pre-industrial sugar production located in tropical and sub-tropical Asia from the Indian sub-continent through to the southernmost islands of Japan. Dutch colonial presentations at the world exhibitions in the period 1880-1931 served to legitimize the Dutch imperialist project and highlight the problem of Dutch identity and the Netherlands' place in the world. At these exhibitions, the Netherlands showed off its colonies by erecting models of schools, sugar-factories, bridges, and railways exhibits, which were meant to give proof of the good works of modern colonial administration and enterprise. Not only were there displays of ethnographic objects, life-size temples and villages inhabited by authentic Javanese and Sumatrans were brought to Europe specifically for these expositions. Their presence took the viewer into an "Other" world that provided an "immediacy" for visitors to the exhibition. While these colonial spectacles helped legitimize Dutch imperialism project, they also provided lenses for understanding the colonial world as it was constructed according to the prevailing evolutionist worldview at the time.
