Book Description
Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics The central problem of evolution is still the nature and causes of variation, while the practical problems of eugenics centre about heredity. Variation in past ages has already endowed the human race with an almost infinite variety of types and characters, many of the latter alternative in their inheritance. We have only to compare those we know best with their relatives and ancestors to realise how minute are the resemblances and differences which may be handed on to descendants and collateral lines. These are, no doubt, chiefly a matter of biological inheritance, though similarity of environment may play a' part in certain cases. Probably in no other species of animal or plant does the number of differences between individuals approach the number to be Observed in man. This is to be expected, because of the mental and physical complexity of the human organism; but it does not imply greater intrinsic variability than in other animals or plants. Book Description
Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics in Relation to Insanity Allow me to thank the Eugenics Society for doing me the honour of asking me to fill the place of so distinguished 'a physician as Sir Wm. Osler, the Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford. The subject of Heredity and Eugenics in relation to Insanity is one which I, as Pathologist to the London County Asylums, have been studying in a practical manner for many years, and the more deeply I consider the question the more I find there is to be done before we shall be safe in drawing ultimate conclusions regarding certain practical questions dealing with the prevention of insanity. Book Description
Excerpt from The Right to Be Well Born: Or Horse Breeding in Its Relation to Eugenics While I take only a bird's eye View of this wide field, over which my experiences have led me, my earnest hope and prayer is that I may cite practical illustrations in the animal kingdom which will open the eyes of the young to a clear understanding of their serious duties to the state, to them selves and to their offspring. It may lead them to a study of the subject and'to a perusal of the writings of some of our well known eugenic scholars, like Dr. C. B. Davenport, Dr. C. L. Reed, Dr. David Starr Jordan, and others, who have gone scientifically into the subject of heredity, in its every phase, with a microscopic ex amination. If they are convinced of the logic of these scientists' arguments, let them help along the good work by putting into practice their convictions, and join us in the advancement of the cause of eugenics. I feel certain that every sensible man and woman, who has given attention to this subject, must acknowledge that it is the all vital question of the hour; that it touches the foundations of society and the stability of our country. Social Heredity and Social Evolution

Book Description
Excerpt from Social Heredity and Social Evolution: The Other Side of Eugenics The application of the great laws of nature to the explanation of the history of the human race is one of the fascinating phases of science. In the study of the evolutionary processes of the organic world that has followed Darwin it has been generally as sumed that the laws which govern the rest of the animal world have also governed the evolution of mankind. That man holds a unique position in nature has been generally recognized; and some times this idea has been so prominent in the minds of scientists, as well as other classes of think ers, as to lead to the assumption that the develop ment of man has been a thing apart from the rest of the living world and due to some special stimulus. Most generally, however, it has been silently as sumed that mankind has been developed under the same kind of laws and forces that have been con cerned in the formation of the lower orders of nature. One of the more recent phases of this belief has found expression in the great interest taken in the modern study of eugenics; for this school is based upon the laws of inheritance as they have been determined by the study of the lower orders of nature which have then been applied to man.
