Book Description
Beginning in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, a new generation of LGBT students in California began to organize publicly on college and university campuses, inspired by contemporaneous social movements and informed by California’s rich history of LGBT community formation and political engagement. Here Are My People documents how a trailblazing group of queer student activists in California made their mark on the history of the modern LGBTQ movement and paved the way for generations of organizers who followed. Rooted in extensive archival research and original oral histories, Here Are My People explores how this organizing unfolded, comparing different regions, types of campuses, and diverse student populations. Through campus-based organizations and within women’s studies programs, and despite various forms of reactionary resistance, student organizers promoted LGBT-themed educational programming and changes to curriculum, provided peer support like counseling and hotlines, and sponsored events showcasing queer creative practices including poetry, theater, and film. Collaborating across various campuses, they formed regional and statewide alliances. And, importantly, LGBT student organizers engaged California’s vibrant gay liberation and lesbian feminist political communities, forging new and important relationships in the movement which enhanced both on and off-campus LGBT organizing.

Book Description
Most of the essays in this volume have appeared in scholarly journals or in books edited by others. A few are published here for the first time. None has been taken from one of my books. A would-be reader would have to go to much trouble to find them; that is the reason for bringing them together. Collections of essays are frequently miscellanies. This one is not. Except for the final two chapters, all deal with some aspect of the American political system. Some have to do with the structure and functioning of the federal system, others with the nature of publi(}-and incidentally other-organization, and still others with the causes and supposed cures of the social problems that government is nowadays expected to solve or cope with. The two final chapters are about the relationship between economics and political science; for lack of a better term they may be methodological.

Your People Shall Be My People

Your People Shall Be My People PDF Author: Don Finto

Book Description
"Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God" (Ruth 1:16). Like Ruth in the Old Testament, every Gentile believer has come out of the land of famine and into the spiritual realm of abundance in the name of Jesus. But unlike Ruth, we have turned our backs on the Jewish people, the relatives of the Messiah. We need to confess personally and corporately on behalf of the Church for centuries of persecution of the Jewish people, looking in these days for every opportunity to bless and not curse them. Once again, Israel and her people are center stage at a crucial moment in world history, and this book shows why the Church must effect reconciliation and why our prayers are vital in this hour. If we will make the same covenent pledge to Israel that Ruth made to Naomi, the Church will never be the same!

My People's Prayer Book Vol 3

My People's Prayer Book Vol 3 PDF Author: Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD
Publisher: Turner Publishing Company
ISBN: 1580237568
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
"The prayer book is our Jewish diary of the centuries, a collection of prayers composed by generations of those who came before us, as they endeavored to express the meaning of their lives and their relationship to God. The prayer book is the essence of the Jewish soul." This stunning work, an empowering entryway to the spiritual revival of our times, enables all of us to claim our connection to the heritage of the traditional Jewish prayer book. It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all. This third volume of the series explores the rich content and meaning of the P'sukei D’zimrah, the morning psalms that serve as the introduction to the larger prayer service. The P’sukei D’zimrah sets the tone and prepares the way for the daily transition from secular routine to the sacred act of communal prayer; Vol. 3 helps us to appreciate this "prayer before the prayer" as a profoundly moving spiritual experience in its own right. Vol. 3—P’sukei D’zimrah (Morning Psalms) features the authentic Hebrew text with a new translation designed to let people know exactly what the prayers say. Introductions tell the reader what to look for in the prayer service, as well as how to truly use the commentaries, to search for—and find—meaning in the prayer book. Commentaries from some of today’s most eminent scholars and teachers from all movements of Judaism examine P’sukei D’zimrah from the perspectives of ancient Rabbis and modern theologians, as well as feminist, halakhic, Talmudic, linguistic, biblical, Chasidic, mystical, and historical perspectives. Even those not yet familiar with the prayer book can appreciate the spiritual richness of P’sukei D’zimrah. My People’s Prayer Book enables all worshipers, of any denomination, to encounter their own connection to 3,000 years of Jewish experience with the world and with God.

It helps rejuvenate Jewish worship in today's world, and makes its power accessible to all. Messianism Among Jews and Christians

Messianism Among Jews and Christians PDF Author: William Horbury
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 9780567088086
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 444

Book Description
This collection of twelve studies is focused on the Herodian period and the New Testament, but looks back to the Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, and onward to Judaism and Christianity in the Roman empire.Within this framework each section includes some treatment of central themes, such as messianism in the Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, the Son of man and Pauline hopes for a new Jerusalem, and Jewish and Christian messianism in the second century. There are also studies of some relatively neglected topics, including suffering and messianism in synagogue poetry, and the relation of Christian and Jewish messianism with conceptions of the church and of antichrist and with the cult of Christ and of the saints.Throughout, an attempt is made to set messianism in a broader religious and political context and to explore its setting in religion and in the conflict of political theories--since the ancient Jewish constitution is both a 'church' and a 'state'. Thus conciliar and priestly constitutional ideals in their bearing on Christian messianism form an important theme here, and again one that is relatively little studied. With regard to religion, there is a study on poetry in honour of Jewish festivals, and a study of the religious as well as political theme of messianism and ruler-cult through study of Herod's temple restoration and the debated reference in Persius to 'Herod's days', here interpreted as Herodian festivals kept by Jews in Rome.
