Social Support

Social Support PDF Author: John D. Morgan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351863886
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 157

Book Description
None of us could survive in the workplace, community, or even in our homes, if we allowed everyone to see how truly vulnerable we are. Yet, social support is a necessity if we are to achieve whatever it is we set out to achieve in this life. "No human being is an island unto himself." "Social Support: A Reflection of Humanity" is a "how to" book. In this work, the authors examine the nature of social support, how it can be offered, and how social support differs from other forms of therapy.

Continuing Bonds

Continuing Bonds PDF Author: Dennis Klass
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1317763602
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 388

Book Description
First published in 1996. This new book gives voice to an emerging consensus among bereavement scholars that our understanding of the grief process needs to be expanded. The dominant 20th century model holds that the function of grief and mourning is to cut bonds with the deceased, thereby freeing the survivor to reinvest in new relationships in the present. Pathological grief has been defined in terms of holding on to the deceased. Close examination reveals that this model is based more on the cultural values of modernity than on any substantial data of what people actually do. Presenting data from several populations, 22 authors - among the most respected in their fields - demonstrate that the health resolution of grief enables one to maintain a continuing bond with the deceased. Despite cultural disapproval and lack of validation by professionals, survivors find places for the dead in their on-going lives and even in their communities. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present. Chapters examine widows and widowers, bereaved children, parents and siblings, and a population previously excluded from bereavement research: adoptees and their birth parents. Bereavement in Japanese culture is also discussed, as are meanings and implications of this new model of grief. Opening new areas of research and scholarly dialogue, this work provides the basis for significant developments in clinical practice in the field.

Mental Health, Intellectual Disabilities and the Aging Process

Mental Health, Intellectual Disabilities and the Aging Process PDF Author: Philip Davidson
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1405172800
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
This book is the third in a series with the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (Series Editor: Matthew P. Janicki). These publications are designed to address the issues of health, adult development and aging among persons with intellectual disabilities. For many years it has been recognized that some adults with intellectual disabilities are at elevated risk for mental and behavioral health problems. Often the aging process can complicate the identification, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this type of dual diagnosis and present complex challenges to clinicians and carers. This book is designed as a practical resource for those involved with the support, care and treatment of persons with intellectual disabilities, and should prove particularly useful as this community achieves increased longevity. The book is divided into three parts: Prevalence and Characteristics; Diagnosis and Treatment; and Service System Issues.
