Helmut Newton, Archives de Nuit

Helmut Newton, Archives de Nuit PDF Author: Helmut Newton
Publisher: Schirmer Mosel
ISBN:
Category : Photography

Pages : 88

Book Description
This book gets its name from 60 unusually dark and cryptic photographs. When Newton opened his "Archives of the Night" in the 90's, gloomy images emerged like flocks of bats. His famous "Domestic Nudes" appeared in pairs and tableaus together with sinister landscapes. Palace architecture was displayed next to morbid vanitas paintings as were bodies cut open from an anatomical museum of wax figures, placed on show alongside a portrait of a Dracula star putting on his make-up. With the Archives, Newton, who decided on the placement of these works himself, showed us his dark side. But at the same time, he was amusing himself with grey areas - also typical for Newton. The juxtaposition of seemingly disparate motifs created new and enigmatic relationships that oscillate between satire and poetry, brutality and gentleness, irony and pathos.

Lost Angeles

Lost Angeles PDF Author: Michael Dressel
Publisher: Gingko Press
ISBN: 9781584237716
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
Michael Dressel's street photography relies on his long practiced ability to anticipate events that are about to happen and the readiness to capture these moments. In Lost Angeles, the viewer is invited to view some of Dressel's most poignant portraits and to be transported to that moment and place. Dressel professes to loving Los Angeles "warts and all" and is clearly comfortable moving through the city's streets, angling for those "magical" moments and showing us things that most would rather look away from. Mr. Dressel was born in East Berlin and spent 2 years in a Stasi prison after being captured while climbing the Berlin wall. He moved from Berlin to Los Angeles in 1986 and has spent the past 35 years taking photos while making a living as a movie sound editor. Lost Angeles features an interview with F. Scott Hess, artist and associate professor at Laguna college of Art along with an afterword by Matthias Harder, the director of the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin. The black & white photographs collected for Lost Angeles were taken between 2014 - 2020. "I do believe in magic. The magic that happens when I am pointing a camera at life and freeze a few hundredths of a second into an image. Afterwards that image turns into this thing that communicates what I think and feel about the world This magic allows me to photograph myself into the world." - Michael Dressel

Bridging the fields of conservation, art history, and museum curating, this volume contains the principal papers from an international symposium titled "Historical Painting Techniques, Materials, and Studio Practice" at the University of Leiden in Amsterdam, Netherlands, from June 26 to 29, 1995. Topics cover the latest art historical research and scientific analyses of original techniques and materials, as well as historical sources, such as medieval treatises and descriptions of painting techniques in historical literature. Chapters include the painting methods of Rembrandt and Vermeer, Dutch 17th-century landscape painting, wall paintings in English churches, Chinese paintings on paper and canvas, and Tibetan thangkas.
