Black Athena Writes Back

Black Athena Writes Back PDF Author: Martin Bernal
Publisher: Duke University Press
ISBN: 0822380072
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 577

Book Description
In Black Athena Writes Back Martin Bernal responds to the passionate debates set off by the 1987 publication of his book Black Athena. Producing a shock wave of reaction from scholars, Black Athena argued that the development of Greek civilization was heavily influenced by Afroasiatic civilizations. Moreover, Bernal asserted that this knowledge had been deliberately obscured by the rampant racism of nineteenth-century Europeans who could not abide the notion that Greek society—for centuries recognized as the originating culture of Europe—had its origins in Africa and Southwest Asia. The subsequent rancor among classicists over Bernal’s theory and accusations was picked up in the popular media, and his suggestion that Greek culture had its origin in Africa was widely derided. In a report on 60 Minutes, for example, it was suggested that Bernal’s hypothesis was essentially an attempt to provide blacks with self-esteem so that they would feel included in the march of progress. In Black Athena Writes Back Bernal provides additional documentation to back up his thesis, as well as offering persuasive explanations of why traditional scholarship on the subject remains inaccurate and why specific arguments lobbed against his theories are themselves faulty. Black Athena Writes Back requires no prior familiarity with either the Black Athena hypothesis or with the arguments advanced against it. It will be essential reading for those who have been following this long-running debate, as well as for those just discovering this fascinating subject.

Heresy in the University

Heresy in the University PDF Author: Jacques Berlinerblau
Publisher: Rutgers University Press
ISBN: 9780813525884
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
Berlinerblau (Judaic studies, Hofstra U.) explores the reactions--widely divergent but mostly intense--to Martin Bernal's 1987 publication of the first volume of Black Athena: The Afroasiatic Roots of Classical Civilization. In light of classicist reacting to an outsider's intrusion into their field and Afrocentrist accusation of stealing the material from black scholars, he considers the question of intellectual responsibility during an age of cultural warfare. He also elucidates the contents of the book itself. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Blood and Belief

Blood and Belief PDF Author: David Biale
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520253043
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 316

Book Description
"A wonderful, rich, and fascinating book, and a great read. Biale explores the meanings of blood within Jewish and Christian cultures from the blood of the sacrifices of the book of Leviticus to the blood of the Eucharist to the blood of medieval blood libels and the place of blood in Nazi ideology. Biale shows that blood symbolism stands at the center of the divide between Judaism and Christianity. This book will be the point of departure for all future studies of the subject."—Shaye J.D. Cohen, Harvard University "I know of no other work that, through numerous insights and useful distinctions, so alerts us to and comprehensively documents the ongoing constitutive role of Christian and anti-Semitic perceptions of Jewish existence and the interactions between them. Whereas much contemporary historiography has become so specialized that historians have surrendered the larger picture, David Biale's panoramic perspective reveals the great value and interest of this work."—Steven E. Aschheim, author of Beyond the Border: The German-Jewish Legacy Abroad

Book Description
The United States of America and Germany have “a rendezvous with destiny,” to quote President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It is a rendezvous that will be devastating for America, yet neither will it bode well for Germany or the rest of the world. The lumbering European Project of 27 nations known as the European Union (EU) eventually will dwindle to ten willing nations (or ten regional groups of nations) federally united under the leadership of Germany. At last, the long-cherished dream of many Europeans for a resurgent and dominant Europe on the world stage will become a reality. With shades of Christendom from the Middle Ages, and free of Anglo-Saxon trappings and the moderating influence of the UK, the new EU will be an economic and military powerhouse that will serve as a counter balance to the once mighty U.S.A. and the growing China threat from the East. The Anglo-Saxon dream of a reinvigorated Anglosphere as an alternative to the EU will prove to be an illusion. Europe will enjoy a few years of unprecedented prosperity before the Project comes to a crashing halt. How to Find America and Germany In the Bible explains why these events will take place. It also tells us that the Israelite nations of Bible fame are alive and well under their modern names and that their day of awakening is near.

The Construction of the Assyrian Empire

The Construction of the Assyrian Empire PDF Author: S. Yamada
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004496831
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 467

Book Description
In numerous ambitious expeditions Shalmaneser III of Assyria (859-824) lay the foundation of the subsequent remarkable military advance to the West of the Neo-Assyrian empire. While systematically scrutinizing and analyzing all accounts of these western campaigns, Shigeo Yamada not only discusses the historiographical problems encountered, together with their impact on the jigsaw of ninth century Ancient Near East history, but also offers new results, and an original historical reconstruction. Ample attention is given to the campaigns’ economic and ideological aspects. The book will serve as a useful reference for all students interested in Assyrian historiography and the history of Assyria and Syria-Palestine. It includes an appendix on a new edition of the Kurkh Monolith, based on the author’s collation.

Inscriptions of the Iron Age

Inscriptions of the Iron Age PDF Author: John David Hawkins
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110804204
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 1068

Book Description
This is an edition of the Hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Late Hittite states of Turkey and Syria. These inscriptions, surviving largely on stone, include monuments of kings to their reigns and works as well as the humbler memorials of subordinates. A few precious survivals of documents in the form of lead strips give us a different type of document: letters and economic texts. Recent discoveries have improved the decipherment and understanding of these inscriptions to a point where new and comprehensive translations can be offered, and the presentation of this in English will make them available for the first time to the wide audience of the English-speaking world. At the same time we are in a position to present more reliable texts than those which have appeared in editions hitherto regarded as standard.
