Heart Rate Variability Analysis with the R package RHRV PDF Author: Constantino Antonio García Martínez
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319653555
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 173

Book Description
This book introduces readers to the basic concepts of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and its most important analysis algorithms using a hands-on approach based on the open-source RHRV software. HRV refers to the variation over time of the intervals between consecutive heartbeats. Despite its apparent simplicity, HRV is one of the most important markers of the autonomic nervous system activity and it has been recognized as a useful predictor of several pathologies. The book discusses all the basic HRV topics, including the physiological contributions to HRV, clinical applications, HRV data acquisition, HRV data manipulation and HRV analysis using time-domain, frequency-domain, time-frequency, nonlinear and fractal techniques. Detailed examples based on real data sets are provided throughout the book to illustrate the algorithms and discuss the physiological implications of the results. Offering a comprehensive guide to analyzing beat information with RHRV, the book is intended for masters and Ph.D. students in various disciplines such as biomedical engineering, human and veterinary medicine, biology, and pharmacy, as well as researchers conducting heart rate variability analyses on both human and animal data.

Complex Systems and Computational Biology Approaches to Acute Inflammation

Complex Systems and Computational Biology Approaches to Acute Inflammation PDF Author: Yoram Vodovotz
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461480086
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The difficulty in achieving effective translation of basic mechanistic biomedical knowledge into effective therapeutics, is the greatest challenge in biomedical research. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the reductionist approaches to understanding and manipulating the acute inflammatory response in the settings of sepsis, trauma/hemorrhage, wound healing, and related processes. This book discusses complex systems and computational biology methods and approaches that have advanced sufficiently to allow for knowledge generation, knowledge integration, and clinical translation in the settings of complex diseases related to the inflammatory response. Well-regulated, self-resolving inflammation is necessary for the appropriate communication and resolution of infection and trauma, and for maintenance of proper physiology and homeostasis. In contrast, self-sustaining inflammation drives the pathobiology of the aforementioned diseases. It is now increasingly recognized that controlling and reprogramming inflammation in order to reap the benefits of this evolutionarily-conserved process is preferred to simply abolishing indiscriminately.

Design, Evaluation, and Application of Heart Rate Variability Analysis Software (HRVAS)

Design, Evaluation, and Application of Heart Rate Variability Analysis Software (HRVAS) PDF Author: John T. Ramshur
Publisher:
ISBN:

Languages : en

Book Description
The analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) has become an increasingly popular and important tool for studying many disease pathologies in the past twenty years. HRV analyses are methods used to non-invasively quantify variability within heart rate. Purposes of this study were to design, evaluate, and apply an easy to use and open-source HRV analysis software package (HRVAS). HRVAS implements four major categories of HRV techniques: statistical and time-domain analysis, frequency-domain analysis, nonlinear analysis, and time-frequency analysis. Software evaluations were accomplished by performing HRV analysis on simulated and public congestive heart failure (CHF) data. Application of HRVAS included studying the effects of hyperaldosteronism on HRV in rats. Simulation and CHF results demonstrated that HRVAS was a dependable HRV analysis tool. Results from the rat hyperaldosteronism model showed that 5 of 26 HRV measures were statistically significant (p

Sleep and Combat-Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Sleep and Combat-Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder PDF Author: Eric Vermetten
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1493971484
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description

This book offers a unique, complete resource addressing all the basic concepts and clinical applications in sleep medicine in settings where combat-related PTSD is commonplace. Authored by leading international experts in the field of sleep/military medicine, Sleep and Combat-Related Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is organized in six sections and provides a broad perspective of the field, from the established theories to the most recent developments in research, including the latest neuroscientific perspectives surrounding sleep and PTSD. The result is a full assessment of sleep in relation to combat-related PTSD and a gold standard volume that is the first of its kind. This comprehensive title will be of great interest to a wide range of clinicians -- from academics and clinicians working within or in partnership with the military health care system to veteran hospital physicians and all health personnel who work with war veterans.

Book Description
Heart rate variability (HRV) is considered a reliable reflection of the many physiological factors modulating the normal rhythm of the heart. It reflects autonomic nervous system (ANS) function, and as such, it is used in numerous fields of medicine. Written by experts in the field, this book provides a comprehensive overview of HRV. The first section is dedicated to technical themes related to monitoring and the variables recorded. The second section highlights use of HRV in hypothermia. Finally, the third section covers general aspects of HRV application.

Mathematics and Technology

Mathematics and Technology PDF Author: Christiane Rousseau
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0387692169
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 580

Book Description
This book introduces the student to numerous modern applications of mathematics in technology. The authors write with clarity and present the mathematics in a clear and straightforward way making it an interesting and easy book to read. Numerous exercises at the end of every section provide practice and reinforce the material in the chapter. An engaging quality of this book is that the authors also present the mathematical material in a historical context and not just the practical one. Mathematics and Technology is intended for undergraduate students in mathematics, instructors and high school teachers. Additionally, its lack of calculus centricity as well as a clear indication of the more difficult topics and relatively advanced references make it suitable for any curious individual with a decent command of high school math.
