Transport and the Environment
Author: Patrick Moriarty
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780858021457
Category : Environmental policy
Languages : en
Pages : 31
Book Description
Remarkable changes have occurred in Australian transport over the past 50 years. On both an absolute and a per capita basis, vehicular passenger and freight tasks have risen greatly, and with them transport's impact on the environment. For passenger travel, the change has mainly been caused by growth in car ownership and travel, which have both flourished under a combination of favourable circumstances. These included low oil prices, a fairly uniform distribution of income, and a marked lack of interest in the unwanted side-effects of private travel. It now appears increasingly doubtful that these fortunate circumstances for car travel can continue.Australia's emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases are very high by world standards, which in turn will mean large cuts, if, as seems inevitable, we have to take the threat of climatic change seriously. Concern over air pollution continues, particularly in our large cities, as, for example, the health impacts of diesel emissions are better understood. Although many false warnings about impending oil shortages have been given in the past, the Cassandras may have it right this time. Sooner or later probably sooner growing oil demand will come up against the limits of annual global oil production. Production in Australia is already near its peak. These issues seem set to command our increasing attention in the coming years.

Health Effects of Transport-related Air Pollution
Author: Michal Krzyzanowski
Publisher: WHO Regional Office Europe
ISBN: 9289013737
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 205
Book Description
Diseases related to the air pollution caused by road transport affect tens of thousands of people in the WHO Europe region each year. This publication considers the policy challenges involved in the need to reduce the related risks to public health and the environment, whilst meeting socio-economic requirements for effective transport systems. It sets out a systematic review of the literature and a comprehensive evaluation of the health hazards of transport-related air pollution, including factors determining emissions, the contribution of traffic to pollution levels, human exposure and the results of epidemiological and toxicological studies to identify and measure the health effects, and suggestions for policy actions and further research.

Green Ports
Author: Rickard Bergqvist
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0128140550
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 312
Book Description
Green Ports: Inland and Seaside Sustainable Transportation Strategies presents the first book to exclusively focus on this important topic that is usually only covered in brief chapters or journal articles that are too theoretical, fragmented or regionally-focused. This book comprehensively and systematically examines the key issues and best practice for understanding green ports and quantifying aspects of their environmental performance. This applied research book will help researchers formulate the needed research questions. Includes practical application tools and techniques for increasing sustainability throughout the entire transportation chain Provides an overall picture of green ports through a collection of expert specialists Examines how ports and surrounding areas are addressing the environmental impacts related to growth in the cruise business Presents a theoretical framework to identify best practices for planning and policymaking for the impacts posed by climate change

The Cost of Air Pollution
Author:
Publisher: Organization for Economic Co-Operation & Development
ISBN: 9789264210424
Category : Air
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Outdoor air pollution kills more than 3 million people across the world every year, and causes health problems from asthma to heart disease for many more. This is costing societies very large amounts in terms of the value of lives lost and ill health. Based on extensive new epidemiological evidence since the 2010 Global Burden of Disease study, and OECD estimates of the Value of Statistical Life, this report provides evidence on the health impacts from air pollution and the related economic costs.

Waste Incineration and Public Health
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030906371X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 336
Book Description
Incineration has been used widely for waste disposal, including household, hazardous, and medical wasteâ€"but there is increasing public concern over the benefits of combusting the waste versus the health risk from pollutants emitted during combustion. Waste Incineration and Public Health informs the emerging debate with the most up-to-date information available on incineration, pollution, and human healthâ€"along with expert conclusions and recommendations for further research and improvement of such areas as risk communication. The committee provides details on: Processes involved in incineration and how contaminants are released. Environmental dynamics of contaminants and routes of human exposure. Tools and approaches for assessing possible human health effects. Scientific concerns pertinent to future regulatory actions. The book also examines some of the social, psychological, and economic factors that affect the communities where incineration takes place and addresses the problem of uncertainty and variation in predicting the health effects of incineration processes.

Non-exhaust Particulate Emissions from Road Transport An Ignored Environmental Policy Challenge
Author: OECD
Publisher: OECD Publishing
ISBN: 9264888853
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 149
Book Description
Non-exhaust emissions of particulate matter constitute a little-known but rising share of emissions from road traffic and have significant negative impacts on public health. This report synthesizes the current state of knowledge about the nature, causes, and consequences of non-exhaust particulate emissions. It also projects how particulate matter emissions from non-exhaust sources may evolve in future years and reflects on policy instrument mixes that can address this largely ignored environmental issue.
