In the Land of a Thousand Gods PDF Author: Christian Marek
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691233659
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 820

Book Description
A monumental history of Asia Minor from the Stone Age to the Roman Empire In this critically acclaimed book, Christian Marek masterfully provides the first comprehensive history of Asia Minor from prehistory to the Roman imperial period. Blending rich narrative with in-depth analyses, In the Land of a Thousand Gods shows Asia Minor’s shifting orientation between East and West and its role as both a melting pot of nations and a bridge for cultural transmission. Marek employs ancient sources to illuminate civic institutions, urban and rural society, agriculture, trade and money, the influential Greek writers of the Second Sophistic, the notoriously bloody exhibitions of the gladiatorial arena, and more. He draws on the latest research—in fields ranging from demography and economics to architecture and religion—to describe how Asia Minor became a center of culture and wealth in the Roman Empire. A breathtaking work of scholarship, In the Land of a Thousand Gods will become the standard reference book on the subject in English.

The First and Second Letters to Timothy

The First and Second Letters to Timothy PDF Author: Jerome D. Quinn
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 9780802824431
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 1004

Book Description
The inaugural volume of the ECC series provides a fresh, readable translation of 1 and 2 Timothy together with notes and commentary on this highly relevant section of Scripture. The Notes section of the commentary offers detailed philological analysis of the majority of the words used in these two Pastoral Epistles. The Comment section guides readers through the complex theological, historical, and practical issues facing the heirs of Paul in the Christian church. The issues treated in 1 and 2 Timothy have a remarkably modern ring to them. Addressing such "contemporary" topics as the qualifications for church leadership, the roles of women, the use of wealth, heterodoxy, worship, and ethics, these Pauline letters remain highly relevant to church life today. This new volume not only offers the best of current biblical scholarship on Paul's letters to Timothy but also demonstrates the high standard of excellence marking the ECC series.

Isokrates: The Forensic Speeches (Nos. 16–21)

Isokrates: The Forensic Speeches (Nos. 16–21) PDF Author: David Whitehead
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1009258303
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 1162

Book Description
The Athenian Isokrates (436–338 BC) is well-known for his long career as an educator and pundit; but originally he wrote 'forensic' speeches, i.e. for delivery in court. Six of them survive (five from Athens, one from Aigina), on issues including assault, fraud and inheritance. Here for the first time, after a General Introduction, they are presented and analysed in depth as a self-contained group. The Greek text and a facing English translation - both new - are augmented by commentaries which juxtapose this material with other surviving writers in the genre (and with Isocrates' own later output). In the process, too, the speeches' historical background, personnel, legal context, rhetorical strategies and all other relevant topics are explored.
