The Masses of Joseph Haydn

The Masses of Joseph Haydn PDF Author: Robert W. Demaree
Publisher:

Category : Haydn, Joseph
Languages : en
Pages : 906

Book Description
"This book examines chronologically the history, sources, character, style, and performance choices within each of the Haydn Masses in careful detail. All this is set in a framework of Haydn's involvement with church music over his whole life span, and, in the context of his childhood as a singer, his career as Kapellmeister to the Princes Esterhazy, and his international prestige at the turn of the nineteenth century. Special focus is given to his performance practices in the churches in which he performed these Masses, his evolving style of orchestration, and his crucial, engaging preferences in rhythmic motion and tempi."--From publisher description.

Book Description
Englische Version: Joseph Haydn's 13th mass (Hob. XXII, 13) of 1801 (1732-1809) is the penultimate of the six large masses commissioned by Prince Nicholas II Esterhazy (1765-1833). Its not authentic epithet of Schöpfungsmesse (Creation Mass) refers to the solo bass voice's singing the words "qui tollis peccata mundi" in the Gloria to a melody from Haydn's oratorio The Creation, i.e."The dew dropping morn, O how she quickens all!" from duet nr. 30. The autograph score presented here is a fair copy with only a few corrections. The voices of the horns, trumpets and timpani found no room on the 14-line music paper of the score. As was customary at the time, Haydn wrote it down on a supplementary score that was not preserved. // Autor: Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Musikabteilung // Datum: 2016
