Relaxation and hypnosis techniques are described, with guidance on how to introduce these to patients and their parents/carers. Techniques that help children cope when receiving injections are detailed, including systematic needle desensitization ; these provide practitioners with options to help resolve DFA and phobia regarding needles. Intravenous sedation, including the challenge of cannulation, is covered comprehensively. Furthermore, cognitive behavioral therapy is presented, with suggestion of practical self-help material when appropriate. Have No Fear, the Dentist is Here

Book Description
A positive relationship between a dentist and patient is paramount in promoting good oral health practices. Dentists rely on patients to maintain good oral hygiene for successful dental care, while patients rely on dentists to provide adequate and appropriate treatment. Specifically, research has found that dental anxiety leads to poor oral health due to insufficient dental self-care practices and infrequent visits to the dentist (Halvari, 2010). The current study sought to expand on these findings by exposing participants to the consequences of both good and poor oral health care practices in an effort to induce changes in participants' dental anxiety. The study found exposure to positive consequences of oral health reduced dental anxiety and exposure to negative consequences of oral health heightened dental anxiety in participants. From these manipulations, dentists may be able to improve patient adherence by approaching patients in a manner that effectively reduces dental anxiety.--Abstract
