Book Description
Hand injuries are common in the acute care setting of trauma hospitals. Occupational therapists (OTs) in the acute care setting need to identify and provide specialty interventions appropriate for the hand therapy population. Based on regulatory requirements of the California Board of Occupational Therapy, professional standards of occupational therapy practice, and continued compentency guidelines, OTs are expected to engage in continuous assessment of clincal competency and improve their skills and knowledge based on the self-assessment. Despite this, OTs often lack access and ongoing support in utilizing evidence-based practice with the hand therapy population in the acute care setting. Research reveals a gap between the needs and values of OTs to use evidence-based practice and the workplace barriers of productivity standards and inaccessibility of evidence. Consistent with the research, this phenomenon was observed at the author's place of clinical practice, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center (PHCMC), in Mission Hills, California, thereby prompting the inspiration for this capstone project. This capstone will provide evidence-based practice clinical protocols and establish a current model for clinical competency assessments to ensure best hand therapy practices within the acute care setting.
