Handbook for the Identification of Leafhoppers and Planthoppers of Rice

Handbook for the Identification of Leafhoppers and Planthoppers of Rice PDF Author: Michael R. Wilson
Publisher: Cabi
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Rice is the most important cereal grown in tropical countries and sapsucking leafhoppers and planthoppers (Homoptera: Auchenorryncha) reduce yields either by direct feeding or by transmitting virus and virus-like pathogens. Effective rice pest management requires the accurate identification of any pest species and this handbook provides keys to identify over 70 leafhopper and planthopper species recorded in the major rice growing regions. All the major pest species are included, as well as others that are frequently found but not yet considered important. A comprehensive account of all these species with descriptions, diagnoses, distributions and notes on biology is given, as well a key to nymphal stages of common Asian species and details of the separation of different instars. An introduction to the morphology and taxonomic grouping of the Auchenorryncha and four pages of colour plates are also included, and the volume is completed by a comprehensive and wide-ranging bibliography.

Planthoppers

Planthoppers PDF Author: R. F. Denno
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461523958
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 806

Book Description
Planthoppers include some of the most devastating pests of major agricultural crops throughout the world. One species, the rice brown planthopper, is among the most economically important pests in Asia. In past decades, government policies encouraged the control of rice planthoppers with synthetic pesticides, a tactic which promoted insecticide resistance and often led to the pesticide-induced resurgence of pest populations. To deter planthopper outbreaks, a more ecologically sound management strategy is being implemented, one based on a thorough investigation of population dynamics, natural enemies, and the genetics of host plant and insecticide adaptation. In the natural habitats of North America and Europe, scientists have also used planthoppers as model organisms to test ecological and evolutionary theory. The consequence of these diverse studies is an extremely scattered literature on planthoppers that has never been synthesized from an ecological perspective. This volume summarizes what is known about planthopper ecology and biological control. It takes a theoretical approach yet is deeply concerned with the application of theory to the practical problems of pest management.

Pages : 143

Book Description
This volume deals with the taxonomy and biology of the Dryinidae and Embolemidae (Hymenoptera: Chrysidoidea) of Fennoscandia and Denmark. These are parasitoids of leafhoppers and planthoppers (Homoptera Auchenorrhyncha). The first part of the book examines general aspects of morphology, biology, natural enemies, economic importance, fossils, evolution and affinities. The second part deals with the classification of the species living in Fennoscandia and Denmark, with keys, descriptions, geographic distribution, hosts and bionomics. The knowledge of the taxonomy and biology of the Dryinidae is important for biological control projects. The book is finely illustrated with 60 original drawings and 32 watercolours.

Desk Encyclopedia of Plant and Fungal Virology

Desk Encyclopedia of Plant and Fungal Virology PDF Author: Marc H.V. van Regenmortel
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 012378560X
Category : Science

Book Description
This volume consists of 85 chapters that highlight recent advances in our knowledge of the viruses that infect plants and fungi. It begins with general topics in plant virology including movement of viruses in plants, the transmission of plant viruses by vectors, and the development of virus-resistant transgenic plants. The second section presents an overview of the properties of a selection of 20 well-studied plant viruses, 23 plant virus genera and a few larger groups of plant viruses. The third section, which is abundantly illustrated, highlights the most economically important virus diseases of cereals, legumes, vegetable crops, fruit trees and ornamentals. The last section describes the major groups of viruses that infect fungi. - The most comprehensive single-volume source providing an overview of virology issues related to plant and fungi - Bridges the gap between basic undergraduate texts and specialized reviews - Concise and general overviews of important topics within the field will help in preparation of lectures, writing reports, or drafting grant applications
