Book Description
Excerpt from Handbook for Surveyors The need of the volume arose merely from the fact that no text-book on elementary surveying in pocket-book form can now be found in the market. While in the field a student should have a book of tables ever at hand, and if these are combined with the text a double advantage is often found, particularly in adjusting instruments and in ruling forms for notes. Handbook of Geomathematics

Handbook of Geomathematics PDF Author: Willi Freeden
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 364201545X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 1371

Book Description
During the last three decades geosciences and geo-engineering were influenced by two essential scenarios: First, the technological progress has changed completely the observational and measurement techniques. Modern high speed computers and satellite based techniques are entering more and more all geodisciplines. Second, there is a growing public concern about the future of our planet, its climate, its environment, and about an expected shortage of natural resources. Obviously, both aspects, viz. efficient strategies of protection against threats of a changing Earth and the exceptional situation of getting terrestrial, airborne as well as spaceborne data of better and better quality explain the strong need of new mathematical structures, tools, and methods. Mathematics concerned with geoscientific problems, i.e., Geomathematics, is becoming increasingly important. The ‘Handbook Geomathematics’ as a central reference work in this area comprises the following scientific fields: (I) observational and measurement key technologies (II) modelling of the system Earth (geosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere) (III) analytic, algebraic, and operator-theoretic methods (IV) statistical and stochastic methods (V) computational and numerical analysis methods (VI) historical background and future perspectives.

International Handbook of Survey Methodology

International Handbook of Survey Methodology PDF Author: Edith D. de Leeuw
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113691062X
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
Taking into account both traditional and emerging modes, this comprehensive new Handbook covers all major methodological and statistical issues in designing and analyzing surveys. With contributions from the world's leading survey methodologists and statisticians, this invaluable new resource provides guidance on collecting survey data and creating meaningful results. Featuring examples from a variety of countries, the book reviews such things as how to deal with sample designs, write survey questions, and collect data on the Internet. A thorough review of the procedures associated with multiple modes of collecting sample survey information and applying that combination of methods that fit the situation best is included. The International Handbook of Survey Methodology opens with the foundations of survey design, ranging from sources of error, to ethical issues. This is followed by a section on design that reviews sampling challenges and tips on writing and testing questions for multiple methods. Part three focuses on data collection, from face-to-face interviews, to Internet and interactive voice response, to special challenges involved in mixing these modes within one survey. Analyzing data from both simple and complex surveys is then explored, as well as procedures for adjusting data. The book concludes with a discussion of maintaining quality. Intended for advanced students and researchers in the behavioral, social, and health sciences, this "must have" resource will appeal to those interested in conducting or using survey data from anywhere in the world, especially those interested in comparing results across countries. The book also serves as a state-of-the-art text for graduate level courses and seminars on survey methodology. A companion website contains additional readings and examples.

Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 328

Book Description
Excerpt from Surveyor's Hand Book, 1908 It has been my object to prepare a book for the use of the surveyor in the field, of convenient size and scope, and one that contains all the essentials for ordinary surveying. It is too much to hope that there are no errors in these pages, in theory Or example. The preliminary proof has been examined by twelve experienced surveyors and I am indebted to them for many valuable suggestions. I am under lasting obligations to my colleagues, R. A. Thompson, Expert Engineer of the Texas Railway Commission; Edward C. H. Bantel, Professor of Civil Engineering; and Stanley P. Finch, Adjunct-Professor in Civil Engineering of the University of Texas. In addition to this assistance I have been aided by valuable suggestions from F. Lavis and Halbert P.Gillette, and from the following leading surveyors and engineers of Texas: C. F. H. von Blucher, Gustav Schleicher, B. F. Love, and W. D. Twichell. The thanks of the author are hereby expressed to W. L. E. Gurley, Keuffel Esser, Eugene Dietzgen Co., and A. Wissler for many illustrations of instruments. The traverse table has been omitted, as the ordinary ones are useless for angles not multiples of quarter degrees, and the large ones are books in themselves. As lands become more valuable, the transit survey is demanded where angles are read to the nearest minute, and for such surveys the small traverse tables are of no avail. Tables I, II, III and IV are taken by permission from Henck's "Field Book," while Table V is from Searles' "Field Engineering."
