Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the cumenical Methodist Conference: City Road Chapel, London, September, 1881 The preliminary steps which led to the assembling of the first cumenical Methodist Conference, were the following: - On the 31st day of May, 1876, the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States, then sitting in the City of Baltimore, adopted a preamble and resolutions setting forth grounds on which it appeared desirable that a Conference should be called together, representing all the diversified bodies of Methodists which had sprung up throughout the world. The Bishops were, by the resolutions, empowered to appoint a Committee to correspond with the recognised authorities of the bodies existing in America and in every other country, and also to take initiatory steps towards the assembling of the proposed Conference. The Members of this Committee were named by the Bishops when assembled in the City of New York in the ensuing November. The Committee, through its Secretary, the Rev. Dr. A. C. George, forthwith entered into correspondence with the different Methodist Churches in America. By this correspondence matters were advanced so far that, in the month of May, 1878, a letter, dated from Philadelphia, and signed by all the nine members of the Committee, was addressed to the British Conference of the Wesleyan Methodists. This letter contained the original preamble and resolutions, and in addition made suggestions both as to topics, and as to the bodies which ought to be represented at the proposed Assembly. It invited the concurrence of the British Conference in the proposal, and Chancellor E. 0. Haven, already appointed as a delegate to England from the Methodist Episcopal Church, was charged with this important communication. By him it was presented to the Conference when assembled in Bradford, under the presidency of the Rev. Dr. Rigg. Chancellor Haven suggested that the place for the assembling of the projected cumenical gathering should be in City Road Chapel, London.
