Book Description
Excerpt from Hand-List of Coniferae, Grown in the Royal Botanic Gardens The Hand-list might properly have formed part of that of the "Trees and Shrubs grown in the Arboretum," but so many persons possess collections of Conifers who are not interested in other ligneous plants that there was an obvious convenience in treating them separately. There was the further advantage that this enabled the species which are grown under glass to be included. The natural order, or rather group, Coniferae, is so well defined that it is desirable to enumerate in one list all the species actually in cultivation at Kew. The present Hand-list (first edition) comprises 227 species, with 340 varieties, belonging to 37 genera. Sir Joseph Hooker, the late Director of the Royal Gardens, had contemplated the preparation of a Catalogue of the Kew Pinetum. In view of this he had drawn up a brief review of the literature of the subject, which he has now, after revision, kindly permitted to be used. "In the following list the species are referred to the genera under which they have been placed by the latest authorities, who have revised the Order Coniferae. A Handbook of the World's Conifers (2 vols.)
Author: Aljos Farjon
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004324518
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 1153
Book Description
A 2017 Choice Magazine "Outstanding Academic Title" Conifers are known to everyone as a conspicuous kind of evergreen trees or shrubs that feature prominently in gardens and parks as well as in many managed forests in the cool to cold temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Numerous books have been written about them and continue to appear, mostly with a bias towards these uses in Europe and North America. This second edition, revised and updated, of A Handbook of the World's Conifers is departing from this traditional approach in that it includes all the world's 615 species of conifers, of which some 200 occur in the tropics. It gives as much information about these and the Southern Hemisphere conifers as about the better known species, drawing on research into the taxonomy, biology, ecology, distribution and uses by the author over nearly 35 years. The result is a truly encyclopedic work, a true handbook of all the world's conifers, richly illustrated by the author with his line drawings and photographs taken from the natural habitats of the species.
