Book Description
Bring a Sensory Garden to life in a structured therapeutic horticulture program! Intergenerational gardening programs bring the generations together. This book presents a tested, hands-on, easy-to-use activity plan that benefits the development of relationships between adults over 70 and school-age children. It shows how to limit frustration for both groups, how to plan activities that are functional and non-contrived, and how to assure that the interaction between elders and children is rewarding and pleasant for both. The activities rely on inexpensive, readily available tools and resources available throughout the growing season. While other books have discussed designing a Sensory Garden for people with disabilities, Generations Gardening Together applies the Sensory Garden design to a specific population, with a focus on the human senses that are stimulated by the garden. This unique sourcebook shows you, step-by-step, how a Sensory Garden can come alive in a structured therapeutic horticulture program. Generations Gardening Together shows how to create a Sensory Garden that will stimulate young and old gardeners alike. It outlines a six-week program curriculum that has been used and developed over ten years to use gardening as a program to bring generations together. You’ll learn therapeutic techniques that benefit elders by promoting self-esteem, creating feelings of pride, competence, and satisfactionboth from creating a garden and through passing on their knowledge and wisdom to the younger generation, inspiring them to use both their long-term and short-term memory skills, increasing physical stimulation, and providing the comfort of familiar plants and their aromas, which can trigger memories of people, places, and vocations. The activities in the book also benefit children through the establishment of a safe environment where people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can come togetheran ideal social situation in which youth can seek the wisdom of elders. Children learn important lessons about accountability, nurturing, and responsibility, for working in a garden teaches youth about life, death, hope, patience, and beauty. Each activity session described in Generations Gardening Together includes the following information: titledescribes the content of the program general statement of purposeidentifies the intent of the program goal(s)outlines the expected outcome(s) of the activity program proceduresprovides a detailed description of each step and the order of the program’s activities evaluationincludes what and how therapeutic program goals are to be measured and recorded materials and equipmentidentifies all the necessary equipment and supplies needed to facilitate the program activity This important resource shows how to provide appropriate (separate) orientation to seniors and children, what to emphasize and what to avoid in creating a program in your community, how to create garden themes that reflect the interests of the participants (ethnic foods, bird and butterfly gardens, planting to attract wildlife, etc.), how to decide what activities are appropriate for the developmental level of the participants, and much more. Generations Gardening Together is an essential resource for therapeutic recreation specialists, occupational therapists, therapeutic horticulture professionals, activity coordinators, master gardeners, and anyone working in an environment where elders and children come together.

Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education

Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education PDF Author: Bobick, Bryna
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1799874273
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 350

Book Description
As art museum educators become more involved in curatorial decisions and creating opportunities for community voices to be represented in the galleries of the museum, museum education is shifting from responding to works of art to developing authentic opportunities for engagement with their communities. Current research focuses on museum education experiences and the wide-reaching benefits of including these experiences into art education courses. As more universities add art museum education to their curricula, there is a need for a text to support the topic and offer examples of real-world museum education experiences. Engaging Communities Through Civic Engagement in Art Museum Education deepens knowledge on museum and art education and civic engagement and bridges the gap from theory to practice. The chapters focus on various sectors of this research, including diversity and inclusion in museum experiences, engaging communities through new techniques, and museum and university partnerships. As such, it includes coverage on timely topics that include programs and audience engagement with the LGBTQ+, refugee, disability, and senior communities; socially responsive museum pedagogy; and the use of student workers. This book is ideal for museum educators, museum directors, curators, professionals, practitioners, researchers, academicians, and students who are interested in updated knowledge and research in art education, curriculum development, and civic engagement.

The Battle For A Generation

The Battle For A Generation PDF Author: Ron Hutchcraft
Publisher: Moody Publishers
ISBN: 1575678705
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
Our kids are bombarded daily with choices we never had to make. They are surrounded by gangs, kids with weapons, and teen-age cocaine dealers, not just on the city streets at night, but at school! Teenage sexual activity has become a fact of life. Abortion a 'necessary evil.' And many kids are making these life-altering decisions without the benefit of wise biblical counsel. They don't know their Creator as the Shepherd of their Heart, and are dying because of it emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes even physically. But you can do something about it. Ron Hutchcraft and Lisa Hutchcraft Whitmer recognize the urgent needs of our kids and know exactly what will help them - a relationship with Jesus Christ and spiritual encouragement to make their beliefs match their behavior. Take a look into the world of today's teens: Relationships matter most to them. Music is their language. Sex is expected...and confusing. They are very lonely, wounded, and lost. Sin is not an issue for them, but the results of sin are. The Battle for a Generation explains how to meet the needs of today's young people right where they live - to bring the realities of Christ to them and then to encourage them to reach others.

Translating Nephesh in the Psalms into Chinese

Translating Nephesh in the Psalms into Chinese PDF Author: Hui Er Yu
Publisher: Langham Publishing
ISBN: 1783684704
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
This interdisciplinary study tackles the controversy of translating nephesh ( נפֶֶשׁ ) by using an intergenerational translation team to deepen our understanding of this term and providing a more valuable translation in Chinese, especially for use in specialist Children’s Bibles. Traditionally nephesh is often translated in the Bible as ‘soul’, but despite the limitations of this popular rendering, it has led Christians in Chinese contexts to falsely understand views regarding the nature of human beings as a trichotomy. Dr Hui Er Yu’s study offers different options for translating nephesh using the context of where the word appears in Scripture as well as in reference to linguistic and cultural meanings in Chinese contexts. The findings in this book will help to remove anthropological misunderstandings among many Chinese Christians related to nephesh as a result of historic translation decisions. Dr Yu takes a unique approach to translation by using an intergenerational Bible translation team, ranging from seven to fifty-one years of age, which not only demonstrates the importance of intergenerational ministry but also presents a way to fulfill the growing need for well-translated Children’s Bibles in China for thousands of young believers. This book provides important lessons for the many translation projects working towards Children’s Bibles but also for how translation of biblical terms can be better reached through this intergenerational process.

Faith and Virtue

Faith and Virtue PDF Author: David Baily Harned
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532692382
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
Faith and Virtue starts with the traditional metaphor and departs dramatically from tradition: ‘Faith and hope and love are not some late and miraculous addition to existence, comforting and exhilarating but finally gratuitous. They are the indispensable foundation for everything else.’ Professor Harned insists that the clue to moral life is vision, for among all the senses it is the eye that serves as the architect of our decisions. In its emphasis on the importance of imagination and oon the integral relationship between the moral and aesthetic aspects of existence, Faith and Virtue provides a salutary remedy for our too often manipulative and instrumental approach to the world and its citizens. In an earlier book, Grace and common Life, the author traced some intimations of grace in ordinary experience, times when the self is surprised by gifts that it could neither expect nor deserve. Now, he examines the effects of grace. In this exploration of the moral life, he argues that the metaphor is no less important now than it used to be, for its consistent focus on the problem of time and the emergency of habit can remind a world which has lost its sense of rhythm that there is more to reality than the present moment, greater rewards than instant gratification, higher values than relevance to the contemporary scene. Virtue cannot be satisfactorily examined without reference to the Church. While virtue is not an exclusive Christian attribute, it would be puzzling to refer to Christian virtue without any reference to a Christian context, since virtues are born from our social experience. This has been the greatest flaw in earlier studies of the metaphor. The old notion, that the theological virtues crown the natural, should be stood on its head, writes the author. He acknowledges the Christian origin of natural theology.

Thoughtrave: An Interdimensional Conversation with Lady Gaga

Thoughtrave: An Interdimensional Conversation with Lady Gaga PDF Author: Lady Gaga
Publisher: punctum books
ISBN: 0692686916
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Thoughtrave is the immediate and most detailed archive of Lady Gaga's emotional, intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual evolution, a reclaiming of her art (and humanity) from within the center of her celebrity during one of the most difficult transitions of her career: Summer 2013-Fall 2014. Lady Gaga: I don't like being used to make money. I feel sad when I am overworked and that I just become a money making machine and that my passion and my creativity take a backseat. That makes me unhappy. So, what did I do? I started to say no. Not doing that. I don't want to do that. I'm not taking that picture. Not going to that event. Not standing by that because that's not what I stand for. Thoughtrave marks perhaps the most important (and unconditional, unpublished, unencumbered) insights into the music industry, the personal battles that accompanied her transition from Stefani to Gaga. "It's one of those rare moments in life when you ask a question of someone you've admired for many years and receive the most honest of answers leading both people into a relationship that was and remains one of the most important of my life," says Baum, a professor, producer, composer, writer, editor, and activist for adjunct professors. As Baum explains to Stefani in one of the many interviews published here for the first time, Robert Craig Baum: It's uncanny for me to look back at 2008-2011 - when I was intensely meditating on the problem "Why is there any being at all?" - to find evidence of your intervention here with me...to find you, back then...before I knew you. It was almost as if I was playing the Bruce Willis character in Twelve Monkeys, overshooting my mark in time/space, aiming for this particular conversation but speaking through Ereignis (life gives) to a moment I (and many others) call "headphones on." As George Elerick writes in his Introduction to the book, "In Hand-to-Hand Battle for the Users," "The book you hold in your hands easily falls into the category of a transgression. It's as though we are breaking into somewhere we are not meant to be (like a rave) and are invited into the mind of one of today's musical geniuses. Maybe we can even equivocate the experience to that of being a member of the paparazzi. Their whole mode of employment is based on breaking social codes and entering into the lives of everyday-people-turned-rock-stars. That's what this book is, a disruptive invitation to break into the life and mind of Lady Gaga, the person, not just the persona."
