After having been a Japanese colony for more than 35 years until 1945, the miraculous economic development in the southern half of the Korean peninsula has multiplied the nation's output nearly 38 times and expanded per capita income by 16 times from $778 to $12,422 (in year 2000 prices) and transformed from basically an agrarian economy to that of a major industrial power, which is now considered one of a dozen or so of most industrialized countries in the world, during the 43-year period between 1953 and 1996. This book is a study of development of the South Korean economy from the time of the cessation of the Korean War to date, based on available data with minimal historical description, focusing on investment, the sources and means of capital formation, which is one of the most critical factors that contributed to economic development, and the government role of in them for economic growth and structural changes. The approach in this study is more analytical (without being mathematical, statistical, or technical, but with supporting quantitative data) than historical.There are a number of studies on some aspects of capital formation and economic development in short articles, but there is no comprehensive study/analysis/book of capital formation and economic development of South Korea since the Korean War, other than this authors comprehensive study of capital formation and economic transformation of Korea before 1945 (1876-1945). Not only this book fills the void of study of the subject after the Korean War but it also complement my first volume.This study reveals a number of significant, though perhaps not all unique, patterns and characteristics of capital formation and economic development of South Korea. The combination of circumstances, approaches, and experiences in the country was in many respects unique in comparison to many developing and developed countries, including many Asian countries, such as Japan and China.

The Korean War is multiple wars. Not only is it a war that began on 25 June 1950, but it is also a conflict that is rooted in Korea's colonial experiences, postcolonial desires and frustrations, and interventions and partitions imposed by outside forces. In South Korea, the war is a site of contestation: Which war should be remembered and how should it be remembered? The site has been overwhelmed by the Manichean official discourse that pits evil communists against innocent Koreans, but the hegemonic project remains unfinished in the face of the resiliency embodied in the survivors who have withstood multiple killings by the state. The historical significance of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Republic of Korea (TRCK), lies in its success in bringing back to life the voices of the silenced that complicate the hegemonic memory of the war as yugio, the "June 25th war." At the same time, the Commission embodies the structural dilemma that the effort to give voice to the silenced has turned to the state to redress the state's wrongdoings. The TRCK as such stands on the problematic boundary between violence and post-violence, insecurity and security, exception and normalcy. Truth and reconciliation, and human security, are perhaps located in a process of defining and redefining the boundary. This edited volume explores such political struggles for the future reflected in the TRCK’s work on the past war that is still present. This book explores the nature of the state-citizen societal relationship in Korea during the transition to neoliberalism, through the lenses of class and nationalism. Examining the process by which a new class, Korean Chinese entrepreneurs, emerged from Korean Chinese enclaves in South Korea and quickly became a leading group within those communities, this book provides a case study of the entrepreneurs running a variety of businesses, including restaurants, travel agencies and trading companies. Whilst Korean Chinese people faced discrimination and stigmatization in Korea, despite their economic contributions to the economy, this book demonstrates how entrepreneurs began to form associations and organisations, campaigning for their equal status in Korean society. Arguing that the formation of these was closely linked to the framework of legal statuses established by the Korean state as it sought to make use of Korean Chinese labour, this book explains how social citizenship was constituted by the interaction between their situational sense of fairness and the contradictory economic and social roles expected of them by the state.
