Among the various reasons which presented themselves in favour of this undertaking, the following appeared to have the greatest weight. It was conceived, that an Hospital and School of Medicine so complete and extensive as Guy' s, embracing, both in theory and practice, the whole range of Sciences con nected with the Healing Art, afforded a store of information worthy of being extended beyond the narrow limits of oral instruction; that the medical oflicers and teachers would gladly avail themselves of a proper and convenient medium, through which to publish such facts or observations as would with less propriwy find a place in a systematic or separate treatise; that the pupils, with great advantage to themselves, would willingly render assistance in taking reports; that. Book Description
Excerpt from Guy's Hospital Reports, 1838, Vol. 3 When we entered upon the commencement of the present work, we stated, that our leading motive was a desire to render generally available a number of important facts and observations, which would otherwise be lost to the majority of the profession; and we endeavoured to shew, that in a science like medicine, which requires an accumulation of facts, every man's available knowledge must be in direct proportion to the experience of which he is in possession; and we then pro ceeded to point out, that this experience is twofold - that which is derived from his own personal observation, and that which he receives from the testimony of others: whence we inferred, that as each man's individual observation must be restricted within certain impassable limits, the only means of rendering medical knowledge permanently and steadily progressive, must be to bring continual additions to the general stock of accessible observations; or, in other words, to place within the reach of medical readers, collections of authentic records. Having thus stated our motives in commencing our present course, we may perhaps be allowed, now that we are somewhat advanced in our career, to look back upon the ground we have trodden, and forward to that over which we have yet to pass. Book Description
Excerpt from Guy's Hospital Reports, Vol. 43 To say that Mahomed was a man of progress may perhaps express in short the many outlets for the activity of his mind. If any fresh subject were mooted, provided that he did not start it, he always had something to say. He seemed to delight in committees and was a member of we know not how many. He was an active man at his medical school, active at the College of Physicians, the meetings of which be regularly attended, and at which he was commencing to speak with some frequency. He was active amongst the profession at large in questions scientific, sanitary, medico political, social no matter what it was, a pressing discussion of any sort found Mahomed somewhere in the outskirts, waiting, eager, almost panting to join in. And thus his last illness found him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
