The Pursuit of High Culture

The Pursuit of High Culture PDF Author: Christina Bashford

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
This monograph investigates the promotion and consumption of high musical culture among leisured society in Victorian London, by focusing on the activities of the concert manager John Ella and his Musical Union. This monograph investigates the promotion and consumption of high musical culture among leisured society in Victorian London, by focusing on the activities of the concert manager John Ella and his Musical Union [1845-81], an eminent, long-lived institution for chamber music, much fĂȘted across Europe in its day. It combines a biography of Ella with a social-economic history of the Musical Union, its players, repertoire and audiences, and sets them against the gradually shifting contexts for London concerts, chamber music and cultural life. Ella's extraordinary life story, which began in provincial, artisan-class obscurity and ended in the upper echelons of London society, shapes thenarrative. Such themes as entrepreneurship, concert management, taste shaping, music appreciation and elite social networks are discussed throughout, as is the curious interplay between the desire to 'sacralize' chamber music, especially Beethoven's, on the one hand, and the need to survive amid the increasing commercial imperatives of London concert life on the other. CHRISTINA BASHFORD is Assistant Professor of Musicology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kings of the Air

Kings of the Air PDF Author: Ian Sumner
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1783463384
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 266

Book Description
In comparison to their British and German counterparts, the French airmen of the Great War are not well known. Yet their aerial exploits were just as remarkable, and their contribution to the war effort on the Western Front was equally important. That is why Ian Sumner's vivid history of the men of the French air force during the war is of such value. He tells their story using the words of the pioneering pilots and observers themselves, drawn from memoirs, diaries, letters, and contemporary newspapers, magazines and official documents. The recollections of the airmen give an authentic portrait of their role and their wartime careers. They cover recruitment and training, reconnaissance and artillery spotting, aerial combat, ground strafing and bombing, and squadron life. They also highlight the technical and tactical innovations made during those hectic years, as well as revealing the airmen's attitude to the enemy - and their thoughts about the ever-present threat of injury and death.

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
A brutal saga of unremitting avarice, corruption, violence and murder combined with the callous exploitation of vast numbers of narcotics addicts in Middle East, Europe and USA. A narrative of organized crime, operated by experts and superabundantly lucrative to the criminal elements involved. A young man, through greed for wealth, plus a feeble conscience, is lured into this maelstrom of moral degeneration and succumbs to complete self-gratification, gradually becoming one of the leading participants in this vicious system under the willing guidance of his tutors in crime. The desperate trail meanders from Egypt to Sicily, Corsica and Marseilles, leading to Paris and the ultimate depredation of Europe by the drug cartel. The fi nal act of this episode opens in Miami, USA. It is suggested that the moral behind this epic is not that CRIME DOES NOT PAY but rather that it pays to know plenty and to keep your mouth well shut!
