The Thermal Physiology of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly (Agraulis Vanillae) Caterpillar and how a Rapidly Changing Climate May Affect Its Geographic Range

The Thermal Physiology of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly (Agraulis Vanillae) Caterpillar and how a Rapidly Changing Climate May Affect Its Geographic Range PDF Author: Stephanie Laura Taylor

Book Description
Anthropogenic effects on the world climate include an increase in global temperatures far exceeding changes that would be expected naturally. Increases in temperature can profoundly affect the distribution and survival of many organisms. Therefore, it is important to understand how temperature effects the physiology and, by extension, ecology of many species. This can inform management and conservation actions as well as help scientists understand the broader implications of a rapidly changing global climate on the biosphere. I used caterpillars of the Gulf Fritillary Butterfly to test the effects of temperature on a broad ranging ectothermic species. The Gulf Fritillary Butterfly is closely tied to Passion Flower plants during their larval development, so they stand to be effected by both direct and indirect effects of changing global temperatures. To better understand their thermal physiology and potential effects of a changing climate, I measured proxies for fitness that correspond to individual survival. I used these data alongside current and predictive temperature models to better understand the relationship of their current range to temperature and make predictions of their future range given global warming. This species is tolerant of high temperatures and their metabolism is significantly down regulated at temperatures below 20°C. Therefore, minimum temperatures appear to limit their distribution. Based on my findings, the future distribution of Gulf Fritillary Butterflies (Agraulis vanillae) can extend northward if temperature were the only limitation.
