The guidelines presented in this document are intended to be used in areas of Ontario which do not have Watershed or Subwatershed Plans, or comprehensive Shoreline Management Plans. The document describes what fish habitat is, why it is protected, and how it is protected through legislation, policies, standards, and guidelines. The following development activities are covered by the guidelines: site preparation and servicing, including vegetation and topsoil removal, site grading, and installation of utilities and roads; stormwater management; groundwater extraction; dredging and filling of water bodies; shoreline alterations such as dock construction and erosion protection works; and water crossings, diversions, ponds, and channelizations. Finally, the information requirements that a proponent must supply to a reviewing agency to address fish habitat concerns are reviewed.
