Guidebook on Environmental Impact Assessment for in Situ Leach Mining Projects

Guidebook on Environmental Impact Assessment for in Situ Leach Mining Projects PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN:
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 180

Book Description
Assessment of the potential environmental impact of an in situ leach (ISL) project is the first step in the permission and licensing process. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) serves as the basis for preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which in turn identifies the potential environmental and socioeconomic impact of a proposed project and outlines measures to mitigate the impact. The EIS review process serves to inform the public about a proposed project as well as provide regulatory agencies with assurance that ISL technology will comply with environmental standards, and that project sites can be rehabilitated to pre-mining use. This publication provides a step-by-step description of project parameters that must be addressed in conducting an EIA and preparing an EIS. It also includes EIA/EIS case histories for current operations in Australia, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan and the United States of America.

Environmental Remediation and Restoration of Contaminated Nuclear and Norm Sites

Environmental Remediation and Restoration of Contaminated Nuclear and Norm Sites PDF Author: L van Velzen
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1782422382
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
Nuclear sites become contaminated with radionuclides due to accidents and activities carried out without due consideration for the environment. Naturally-occurring radioactive materials (NORM) released by industrial processes such as coal power production and fertilizer manufacture may also require clean-up. Environmental remediation and restoration aim to reduce exposure to radiation from contaminated soil or groundwater. This book provides a comprehensive overview of this area. Part 1 provides an introduction to the different types of contaminated site and their characteristics. Part 2 addresses environmental restoration frameworks and processes. Part 3 then reviews different remediation techniques and methods of waste disposal. - Explores types and characteristics of contaminated nuclear and NORM sites - Provides an in depth guide to environmental restoration frameworks and processes including stakeholder involvement, risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis in the remediation and restoration of contaminated nuclear and NORM sites - Offers coverage of remediation techniques and waste disposal from electrokinetic remediation to in situ and ex situ bioremediation of radionuclides contaminated soils

The Environmental Behaviour of Uranium

The Environmental Behaviour of Uranium PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201269226
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
This publication is one of the series of IAEA publications on the environmental behaviour of naturally occurring radionuclides. It outlines uranium behaviour in different environments, as well as its transfer to, and metabolism in, humans. The publication also provides concepts, models and data required for the assessment of the impacts of uranium on non-human biota. Assessing the environmental and health effects of uranium poses specific challenges because of the combination of different types of hazard and potential exposures. Therefore, both the radiotoxicity and chemical toxicity of uranium are considered in this publication.

Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation, United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) 2016 Report

Sources, Effects and Risks of Ionizing Radiation, United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) 2016 Report PDF Author: United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR)
Publisher: United Nations
ISBN: 9210600029
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 512

Book Description
This report assesses the levels and effects of exposure to ionizing radiation. Scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This report comprises a report with two underpinning scientific annexes. The first annex recapitulates and clarifies the philosophy of science as well as the scientific knowledge for attributing observed health effects in individuals and populations to radiation exposure, and distinguishes between that and inferring risk to individuals and populations from an exposure. The second annex reviews the latest thinking and approaches to quantifying the uncertainties in assessments of risk from radiation exposure, and illustrates these approaches with application to examples that are highly pertinent to radiation protection.

A Preliminary Inventory and Assessment of Uranium Resources in Mine Wastes

A Preliminary Inventory and Assessment of Uranium Resources in Mine Wastes PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789201057211
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Typically, discussions of the uranium production cycle are focused on either the economic extraction of resources, or on the environmental and remediation aspects as parallel aspects in a linear cradle-to-grave process. In this publication, resource evaluation is expanded to the full life of the mine to include evaluation of resources in residual waste products. This is viewed in the context of potential reuse or remining of so-called anthropogenic resources in a circular economy. The publication is intended to not only provide a preliminary inventory of uranium contained in mine wastes including the desirable goal of comprehensive extraction in the (uranium) mining industry, but also to provide an initial framework to integrate this aim with those of environmental and remediation considerations in achieving zero waste.
