A New Owner's Guide to Staffordshire Bull Terriers PDF Author: Nicole N.

Book Description
ABOUT THE BOOK If you are new to the world of Staffordshire bull terriers and are considering adding one to your family, or if you have a new puppy at home and would like some direction on where to go from here, you have come to the right place. This guide will walk you through some of the crucial first steps of your new puppy's life, and give you tips ensure it will be long and healthy one. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are an extremely active and highly intelligent breed of dog. With their high energy level and athletic ability, they are generally best suited to active owners who can incorporate the amount of exercise required by these dogs into their daily routine. They make great family dogs and do very well around children. They are very eager to please and will do just about anything to receive praise from their owners. These people-loving dogs thrive on a high level of socialization and play. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Unless you want your new Staffie to gnaw on everything in sight, a number of durable chew toys are an absolute must for this breed. They have a strong chewing drive and cannot be trained to just not chew at all. Braided rope toys are an excellent choice and stand up well to continuous use. Do not give weak toys to Staffordshire Bull Terriers, or they will quickly have them chewed to pieces. These pieces present a significant choking hazard and should be avoided at all times. Socializing Your Staffordshire Bull Terrier Introducing your Staffie to a wide range of other people and animals is important in raising a well-rounded and social animal. When introducing your dog to new people, make sure he is in a calm state. Have him sit and wait on your command before being allowed to approach. Walk over to the guest with your dog and allow him to sniff and greet your visitor. Do not allow any jumping or overly excited behavior. If your dog is getting too riled up, remove him from the situation and have him remain in a seated or lying position until he has returned to a calm state. Repeat this process until he greets properly. If you are consistent with enforcing this behavior, you will be rewarded with a dog that friends and family will find a pleasure to be around... Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of Miniature Bull Terriers

Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of Miniature Bull Terriers PDF Author: Ross D. Clark

Book Description
This book (Miniature Bull Terriers) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning badger dog and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
