Carbohodrates And Proteins

Carbohodrates And Proteins PDF Author: Amit Arora
Publisher: Discovery Publishing House
ISBN: 9788183561785
Category : Carbohydrates
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
This book is written for B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc., students of various universities. In this book my aim has been describe the fundamental principles of organic chemistry. Since I do not consider the chemistry of natural products to be fundamental chemistry but rather the application of fundamental principles. The subject matter described in this book covers much of the basic organic chemistry that is needed by a student who wish to study chemistry as a main subject at degree level. The arrangement of the subjectmatter is based on homologous series and in general, descriptions of reactions are followed by discussion of their mechanisms and these includes an elementary account of the sort of evidence that led workers to suggest mechanisms that are acceptable at the present time.

Intermetallics

Intermetallics PDF Author: Walter Steurer
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0191023922
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 600

Book Description
The fascinating world of intermetallics is largely unexplored. There are many exciting physical properties and important technological applications of intermetallics, from magnetism to superconductivity. The main focus of this book is on the statistics, topology and geometry of crystal structures and structure types of intermetallic phases. The underlying physics, in particular chemical bonding, is discussed whenever it helps understand the stability of structures and the origin of their physical properties. The authors' approach, based on the statistical analysis of more than twenty thousand intermetallic compounds in the data base Pearson's Crystal Data, uncovers important structural relationships and illustrates the relative simplicity of most of the general structural building principles. It also shows that a large variety of actual structures can be related to a rather small number of aristotypes. The text aims to be readable and beneficial in one way or another to everyone interested in intermetallic phases, from graduate students to experts in solid state chemistry and physics, and materials science. For that purpose it avoids the use of enigmatic abstract terminology for the classification of structures. Instead, it focuses on the statistical analysis of crystal structures and structure types in order to draw together a larger overview of intermetallics, and indicate the gaps in it - areas still to be explored, and potential sources of worthwhile research. The text should be read as a reference guide to the incredibly rich world of intermetallic phases.

The Devil's Chain

The Devil's Chain PDF Author: Keely Stauter-Halsted
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501701665
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
In the half-century before Poland’s long-awaited political independence in 1918, anxiety surrounding the country’s burgeoning sex industry fueled nearly constant public debate. The Devil’s Chain is the first book to examine the world of commercial sex throughout the partitioned Polish territories, uncovering a previously hidden conversation about sexuality, gender propriety, and social class. Keely Stauter-Halsted situates the preoccupation with prostitution in the context of Poland’s struggle for political independence and its difficult transition to modernity. She traces the Poles’ growing anxiety about white slavery, venereal disease, and eugenics by examining the regulation of the female body, the rise of medical authority, and the role of social reformers in addressing the problem of paid sex. Stauter-Halsted argues that the sale of sex was positioned at the juncture of mass and elite cultures, affecting nearly every aspect of urban life and bringing together sharply divergent social classes in what had long been a radically stratified society. She captures the experiences of the impoverished women who turned to the streets and draws a vivid picture of the social milieu that shaped their choices. The Devil’s Chain demonstrates that discussions of prostitution and its attendant disorders—sexual deviancy, alcoholism, child abuse, vagrancy, and other related problems—reflected differing visions for the future of the Polish nation.
