Resumen: Este trabajo contiene los aportes hechos sobre el componente ambiental del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero, en la consultoría firmada entre un grupo de investigadoras y la Red Alma Mater. Dicho convenio tenía como objetivo primordial elaborar las bases para una guía que incluyera los valores del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero en los procesos de ordenamiento territorial y así servir de apoyo a los planificadores de los municipios que hacen parte de este paisaje. Desde éste particular, se aportó con la identificación de sus valores ambientales, para lo cual se hizo trabajo de investigación y se tuvo en cuenta los resultados de los talleres realizados por la Ingeniera Urte Duis y su equipo de trabajo entre el 2007 y 2009, donde la comunidad reconoce diferentes valores que les gustaría conservar; con estos datos se trazaron algunas pautas para su inclusión en los Planes de Ordenamiento Territorial de los municipios que conforman este paisaje cultural y se hicieron algunas recomendaciones, útiles para la candidatura ante la UNESCO.

Resumen: En este trabajo de grado se realizó una caracterización de las amenazas del territorio del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero (PCC), la cual es la parte más extensa del documento debido al análisis de dos bases de datos (UNGRD, Desinventar) para un periodo de tiempo de 1998 hasta el 2015, en los cuatro departamentos que pertenecen a esta declaratoria (Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda y Valle del Cauca). Posteriormente, se realizó un análisis de los escenarios de cambio climático enfocándose en los efectos a los sistemas agrícolas y demás actividades económicas e influyentes del territorio. En este sentido, por cada atributo del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero se describió cómo los eventos de variabilidad y cambio climático pueden incidir positiva o negativamente en ellos. A partir de allí se propuso los aspectos de ordenamiento territorial que se deben abordar desde la gestión del cambio climático del PCC y se recomienda cómo se puede incorporar estos atributos a los procesos de revisión y ajuste de los planes de ordenamiento por medio de los componentes de estos instrumentos de planificación. Es así, como en la primer parte, se realizó el análisis a las amenazas climáticas que se han presentado en los departamentos de Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda y Valle del Cauca. En la caracterización realizada, se tuvieron en cuenta las amenazas derivadas de fenómenos de variabilidad y Cambio climático. Estos fenómenos fueron revisados en las bases de datos mencionadas anteriormente, a las cuales se les hizo el análisis paralelo, por encontrase diferencias en los procesos de toma de datos y consistencia entre ellas. De estas bases se caracterizó la afectación a infraestructuras, personas y hectáreas por cada categoría de amenaza, pues son variables de afectación que representan la parte física y tangible de los atributos del Paisaje Cultural Cafetero. Can developing countries trade their way out of poverty? International trade has grown dramatically in the last two decades in the global economy, and trade is an important source of revenue in developing countries. Yet, many low-income countries have been producing and exporting tropical commodities for a long time. They are still poor. This book is a major analytical contribution to understanding commodity production and trade, as well as putting forward policy-relevant suggestions for ‘solving’ the commodity problem. Through the study of the global value chain for coffee, the authors recast the ‘development problem’ for countries relying on commodity exports in entirely new ways. They do so by analysing the so-called coffee paradox – the coexistence of a ‘coffee boom’ in consuming countries and of a ‘coffee crisis’ in producing countries. New consumption patterns have emerged with the growing importance of specialty, fair trade and other ‘sustainable’ coffees. In consuming countries, coffee has become a fashionable drink and coffee bar chains have expanded rapidly. At the same time, international coffee prices have fallen dramatically and producers receive the lowest prices in decades. This book shows that the coffee paradox exists because what farmers sell and what consumers buy are becoming increasingly ‘different’ coffees. It is not material quality that contemporary coffee consumers pay for, but mostly symbolic quality and in-person services. As long as coffee farmers and their organizations do not control at least parts of this ‘immaterial’ production, they will keep receiving low prices. The Coffee Paradox seeks ways out from this situation by addressing some key questions: What kinds of quality attributes are combined in a coffee cup or coffee package? Who is producing these attributes? How can part of these attributes be produced by developing country farmers? To what extent are specialty and sustainable coffees achieving these objectives?

The current restructuring of the world-economy under global capitalism has further integrated international trade and production. It thus has brought to the fore the key role of commodity chains in the relationships of capital, labor, and states. Commodity chains are most simply defined as the link between successive processes of manufacturing that result in a final product available for individual consumption. Each production site in the chain involves organizing the acquisition of necessary raw materials plus semifinished inputs, the recruitment of labor power and its provisioning, arranging transportation to the next site, and the construction of modes of distribution (via markets and transfers) and consumption. The contributors to this volume explore and elaborate the global commodity chains (GCCs) approach, which reformulates the basic conceptual categories for analyzing varied patterns of global organization and change. The GCC framework allows the authors to pose questions about development issues, past and present, that are not easily handled by previous paradigms and to more adequately forge the macro-micro links between processes that are generally assumed to be discretely contained within global, national, and local units of analysis. The paradigm that GCCs embody is a network-centered, historical approach that probes above and below the level of the nation-state to better analyze structure and change in the contemporary world.
