Urban Patterns of Growth was carried out for the preparation of the Nordic regional policy co-operation programme 2013-2016 and national regional policies in the Nordic countries. A key issue is the concentration of economic growth in the largest cities. This is favored by urbanisation economies but also by the forming of specialised international networks of innovation and production established far beyond regional and national borders. Much research has focused upon these new global networks, leaving behind the question of the national spreading effects of the production that has not been outsourced. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to elucidate, via case studies, the extent to which the purchases of supplies and services from knowledge firms are located in proximity of the company or whether these purchases have spread to the remaining part of the country.

The Nordic welfare states are facing new challenges in an increasingly globalised world. Fiercer competition has underlined the need for the Nordics to enhance competitiveness - and to support and nurse growth in industry and businesses. This report presents the key findings and policy recommendations of the project "Nordic Growth Sectors." Having identified growth companies in the Nordics, the project analyses growth drivers, the match between supply and demand of labour, the work environment in the companies, and growth and other companies' perceptions of existing framework conditions and improvement needs. A remarkable fifteen Nordic family businesses are among the 500 biggest companies in the world and the Nordic countries have more dynasties than most others per capita and in GDP terms. This co-operation programme outlines the primary co-operation areas and sets a clear direction for Nordic co-operation on business policy. Through this co-operation programme the Nordic ministers for business and industry want to safeguard the region’s ability to adapt quickly, to support innovation and competitiveness, and to improve global market opportunities. Furthermore the ministers want co-operation that promotes Nordic interests in the EU. The programme shall be based on each country’s focus areas and national initiatives in relation to business policy. Similarly the programme builds upon the success of previous Nordic initiatives and relevant UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
