Lithuanians in Michigan
Author: Marius K. Grazulis
Publisher: MSU Press
ISBN: 0870139207
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
In Lithuanians in Michigan Marius Grazulis recounts the history of an immigrant group that has struggled to maintain its identity. Grazulis estimates that about 20 percent of the 1.6 million Lithuanians who immigrated to the United States arrived on American shores between 1860 and 1918. While first-wave immigrants stayed mostly on the east coast, by 1920 about one-third of newly immigrated Lithuanians lived in Michigan, working in heavy industry and mining. With remarkable detail, Grazulis traces the ways these groups have maintained their ethnic identity in Michigan in the face of changing demographics in their neighborhoods and changing interests among their children, along with the challenges posed by newly arriving "modern" Lithuanian immigrants, who did not read the same books, sing the same songs, celebrate the same holidays, or even speak the same language that previous waves of Lithuanian immigrants had preserved in America. Anyone interested in immigrant history will find Lithuanians in Michigan simultaneously familiar, fascinating, and moving.

Thin Ice
Author: Reinder Van Til
Publisher: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
ISBN: 0802824781
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 417
Book Description
DESCRIPTION This unique volume contains twenty-eight fascinating life stories of people -- many of whom went on to become famous -- who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The coming-of-age stories in Thin Ice relate a range of experiences both good and bad, including happy memories and heartwarming recollections but also personal traumas, intergenerational and racial conflicts, the strictures of religious belief and practice, the joys and sorrows of young romance, and more. Above and beyond the stories of the more notable personalities -- Jim Harrison, Roger Wilkins, John Hockenberry, President Gerald Ford, Betty Ford, Al Green, Paul Schrader, William Brashler -- the book as a whole is chock-full of crisp, humorous, irreverent, and moving writing. Reinder Van Til and Gordon Olson have excerpted half of the pieces from previous publications, while they directly solicited the other half from active writers specifically for this book. The earliest stories go back to the 1830s and 1850s, and the most recent are a cluster of contemporary pieces that describe coming of age in the Grand Rapids of the 1960s through the 1980s. Together they paint a multifaceted, impressionistic portrait of a century and a half in the fair city of Grand Rapids, Michigan. All in all, Thin Ice is a nostalgic treasure for any Grand Rapidian and literary treasure for e v e r y one. Contributors Albert Baxter Charles E. Belknap A. J. Lithuanian Architecture and Urbanism
Author: Almantas Samalavičius
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527523292
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 211
Book Description
This volume brings together essays focused on Lithuania’s architectural and urban legacy, as well as recent developments since 1990, when the country said a firm farewell to the era of dependence and the Soviet communist regime. Nevertheless, as the book argues, the legacy of the past still dominates due to an uncritical adoption of Modernist dogmas in architecture and urban design by architects and urban designers during the last two decades of Soviet colonization. It offers a critical overview of urban developments during the last three decades which were marked by the emergence of private capital, the market economy and the growth of the real estate sector. The rapid expansion of the building industry brought new challenges to architects and urban designers, and more often than not they fell prey to the new ideology of economism, commodification and commercialism. These developments are reflected in the urban tissue and aesthetics, as well as in the present shape of urban public spaces, in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius and other large cities. The book will be useful to architectural and cultural historians, as well as to critics interested in current developments and historical trends in eastern Europe and Baltic urban and architectural developments.
