The Hauling-Out Behavior of the Pacific Walrus

The Hauling-Out Behavior of the Pacific Walrus PDF Author: Douglas Wartzok
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Remote sensing in marine biology
Languages : en
Pages : 57

Book Description
Important questions on the natural history of marine mammals need to be answered before management can be placed on a more certain basis. We investigated one aspect of the natural history of Pacific walruses, Odobenus rosmarus divergens. We concentrated on walrus hauling-out behavior and the associated environmental factors which influence this behavior. We employed primarily visual photography and infrared imaging in order to gain new insights into the relationship between behavior and the environment. High-resolution color film proved to be the best remote sensing technique for distinguishing walruses from their haulout areas and for counting the animals. Infrared imaging was much better for detecting small groups of animals, particularly when the ice was broken up into many small floes. Most remote sensing flights were conducted at an altitude of 300 to 400 m since this altitude gave the best resolution for counting animals on the photographs.

Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Otariids and the Odobenid

Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Otariids and the Odobenid PDF Author: Claudio Campagna
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030591840
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 667

Book Description
This book is focused on the marine mammalian groups the Otariidae and the Odobenidae, otherwise known as fur seals, sea lions and the walrus. In 30 chapters, more than 60 authors from 30 institutions and 13 nationalities, discuss a broad suite of topics from maternal care and mating behavior, through play, cognition and personality, to adaptation to life in the Anthropocene. The authors explore the behaviors that have allowed these semi-aquatic mammals to thrive in the marine realm. Many populations have recovered following historical decimation, with interesting evolutionary consequences which are explored. Detailed, selected, individual species descriptions are also provided, showcasing the behavioral diversity of this engaging, adaptive and highly successful group of marine mammals.

The Atlantic Walrus

The Atlantic Walrus PDF Author: XĂ©nia Keighley
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128174315
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 359

Book Description
The Atlantic Walrus: Multidisciplinary insights into human-animal interactions addresses the key dimensions of long-term human walrus interactions across the Atlantic Arctic and subarctic regions, over the past millennia. This book brings together research from across the social and natural sciences to explore walrus biology, human culture, environmental conditions and their reciprocal effects. Together, 13 chapters of this book reconstruct the early evolution of walruses, walrus biology, the cultural significance and ecological impact of prehistoric and indigenous hunting practices, as well as the effects of commercial hunting and international trade. This book also examines historic and ongoing management strategies and, the importance of new research methodologies in revealing hitherto unknown details of the past, and concludes by discussing the future for Atlantic walruses in the face of climate change and increased human activities in the Arctic. This volume is an ideal resource for those who are seeking to understand an iconic Arctic species and its long and complex relationship with humans. This includes individuals and researchers with a personal or professional connection to walruses or the Arctic, as well as marine biologists, zoologists, conservationists, paleontologists, archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, indigenous communities, natural resource managers and government agencies. Provides succinct overviews of the biology of the Atlantic Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) as well as human cultures within the North Atlantic Arctic and the surrounding region by consolidating research which until now has been scattered across fields and academic publications Editorial team of inter-disciplinary researchers ensuring the breadth, depth and integration of material covered throughout the volume Thirteen chapters, each authored by leading international researchers and experts on the Atlantic Walrus Considers the inter-relatedness and complexity of species biology, ecological change, human culture, and anthropogenic pressures onto the Atlantic Walrus, all while remaining accessible to readers from different disciplines or a more generalist audience Draws upon the latest methods in marine mammal and archaeological research Assesses historical management of the species, while also considering current and future conservation efforts in light of human activities and climate change Text supported by striking and insightful new maps and scientific illustrations, ideal for teaching and outreach

Infanticide And Parental Care

Infanticide And Parental Care PDF Author: Stefano Parmigiani
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134948034
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 522

Book Description
First published in 1994. Infanticide is an extremely complex behavioral pattern that occurs throughout the animal kingdom and it must be considered not only in isolation but also from the viewpoint of an animal's care of its young. Infanticide and Parental Care will be of interest to zoologists, evolutionary biologists and biological anthropologists. The concept of infanticide is considered in different mammals such as humans, primates, pinnipeds, lions, dwarf mongooses and prairie dogs and in non-mammals including insects and birds. Infanticide and Parental Care also views the topic in different environmental conditions such as the natural habitat of an animal and animals kept in laboratory conditions. The wide implications of infanticide mean that this book will also be useful to historians, anthropologists, sociologists and psychologists.
