Group Relations and Other Meditations

Group Relations and Other Meditations PDF Author: Carlos Sapochnik
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000424839
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 189

Book Description
This book examines the Tavistock tradition of using group relations conferences as temporary training organizations for groups and institutions, and how those can inform and enrich the theory and practice of experiential learning more generally. First, this book analyses the structures, rituals, and beliefs of group relations conferences, drawing on the author’s learned experience in the field, followed by meditations extending to broader areas, such as the social nature of corruption, martial arts, Western culture’s longing for creativity, and the use of drawing in social science research. It addresses the tension between psychoanalysis and systemic theory in group relations thinking, refining and re-defining key concepts of the practice, challenging notions of dependence and dependency, performative poetics, learning, the politics of power, nostalgia, and the unspoken reasons for the wish to join conference staff teams. It offers a critique of the polarity concerning terms such as spontaneity, the sense of mystery, openness to the unexpected, and trust in unconscious processes, as opposed to the desire for certainty and the confusion, anxiety, and aggression evoked when groups find themselves without familiar signposts. Drawing on his thinking developed over the course of a professional life as organizational consultant, artist, designer, teacher, researcher, and poet, the author invites the reader to challenge boundaries towards a less inflexible and defended engagement with the Other. The metaphor of bricolage, an activity that inspires creativity and originality, suggests possible ways of putting known things together to approach new meaning as provisional and shifting. The many strands thus gathered reveal new dimensions of group life that crucially affect our everyday living and surviving, both as individuals and as members of society. This work will allow psychoanalysts, psychotherapists, group therapists, organizational consultants and trainers to put the lessons learned from group relations conferences into everyday practice.

Organization in the Mind

Organization in the Mind PDF Author: David Armstrong
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 9781855753976
Category : Group relations training
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Both as a practitioner and a thinker, David Armstrong has, for many years, been a leading figure internationally in the fields of organizational consultancy and group relations. In papers presented at a wide range of gatherings -- in North America, Israel, Australia and Bulgaria, as well as in mainland Europe and the United Kingdom -- he has produced a body of work in which he explores the practical application of psychoanalytic thinking in organizational contexts. He is particularly well-known for his innovative interpretations of the ideas of Wilfred Bion. This book brings together for the first time his key writings in this area, and should become essential reading for managers and leaders who wish to deepen their understanding of their experiences in their roles, as well as for organizational consultants, academics and students of organizations. These are "occasional" pieces: that is, they were written for specific occasions and specific audiences. Together they make up a fascinating range of novel ideas that are both theoretically challenging and deeply practical, illustrated as they are throughout by case material from his work with organizational clients. Each chapter is set in context, to explain the evolution of the ideas presented, and the Introduction, written for the occasion, both sets the whole in context and expands on the key notion of "organization-in-the-mind."

Leadership and Power

Leadership and Power PDF Author: Daan Van Knippenberg
Publisher: SAGE
ISBN: 1446239985
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 279

Book Description
Leadership and associated power issues lie at the core of group life in a variety of contexts. Even the most informal of groups typically have some form of leadership in their organization, and the understanding of leadership and power from a psychological standpoint can inform a greater understanding of group dynamics both inside and outside of the workplace. Leadership and Power is a synthesis of contributions from eminent social psychologists and organizational scientists that addresses these issues from a fresh perspective. In recent years, these themes have been re-examined through the lens of social categorization approaches that highlight people′s social identity and social roles as group members, as well as the processes that influence perceptions of and expectations about people and groups. The book is wide-ranging; chapters cover such diverse issues as: interpersonal versus group-oriented styles of leadership; leadership of totalist groups; political leadership; and gender and leadership. It represents a state-of-the-art overview of this burgeoning field that will be important to a host of disciplines. Elements of cross-referencing to highlight thematic links as well as effective chapter conclusions will make the text appealing to advanced students taking courses in social and organizational psychology, management and organization studies, not just scholars interested in these themes.
