Group Analysis of Differential Equations

Group Analysis of Differential Equations PDF Author: L. V. Ovsiannikov
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 1483219062
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 433

Book Description
Group Analysis of Differential Equations provides a systematic exposition of the theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras and its application to creating algorithms for solving the problems of the group analysis of differential equations. This text is organized into eight chapters. Chapters I to III describe the one-parameter group with its tangential field of vectors. The nonstandard treatment of the Banach Lie groups is reviewed in Chapter IV, including a discussion of the complete theory of Lie group transformations. Chapters V and VI cover the construction of partial solution classes for the given differential equation with a known admitted group. The theory of differential invariants that is developed on an infinitesimal basis is elaborated in Chapter VII. The last chapter outlines the ways in which the methods of group analysis are used in special issues involving differential equations. This publication is a good source for students and specialists concerned with areas in which ordinary and partial differential equations play an important role.

Elementary Lie Group Analysis and Ordinary Differential Equations

Elementary Lie Group Analysis and Ordinary Differential Equations PDF Author: Nailʹ Khaĭrullovich Ibragimov
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN:
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Lie group analysis, based on symmetry and invariance principles, is the only systematic method for solving nonlinear differential equations analytically. One of Lie's striking achievements was the discovery that the majority of classical devices for integration of special types of ordinary differential equations could be explained and deduced by his theory. Moreover, this theory provides a universal tool for tackling considerable numbers of differential equations when other means of integration fail. * This is the first modern text on ordinary differential equations where the basic integration methods are derived from Lie group theory * Includes a concise and self contained introduction to differential equations * Easy to follow and comprehensive introduction to Lie group analysis * The methods described in this book have many applications The author provides students and their teachers with a flexible text for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, spanning a variety of topics from the basic theory through to its many applications. The philosophy of Lie groups has become an essential part of the mathematical culture for anyone investigating mathematical models of physical, engineering and natural problems.

Applications of Lie Groups to Differential Equations

Applications of Lie Groups to Differential Equations PDF Author: Peter J. Olver
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468402749
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 524

Book Description
This book is devoted to explaining a wide range of applications of con tinuous symmetry groups to physically important systems of differential equations. Emphasis is placed on significant applications of group-theoretic methods, organized so that the applied reader can readily learn the basic computational techniques required for genuine physical problems. The first chapter collects together (but does not prove) those aspects of Lie group theory which are of importance to differential equations. Applications covered in the body of the book include calculation of symmetry groups of differential equations, integration of ordinary differential equations, including special techniques for Euler-Lagrange equations or Hamiltonian systems, differential invariants and construction of equations with pre scribed symmetry groups, group-invariant solutions of partial differential equations, dimensional analysis, and the connections between conservation laws and symmetry groups. Generalizations of the basic symmetry group concept, and applications to conservation laws, integrability conditions, completely integrable systems and soliton equations, and bi-Hamiltonian systems are covered in detail. The exposition is reasonably self-contained, and supplemented by numerous examples of direct physical importance, chosen from classical mechanics, fluid mechanics, elasticity and other applied areas.

Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers

Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers PDF Author: James M. Hill
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849344428
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
Differential Equations and Group Methods for Scientists and Engineers presents a basic introduction to the technically complex area of invariant one-parameter Lie group methods and their use in solving differential equations. The book features discussions on ordinary differential equations (first, second, and higher order) in addition to partial differential equations (linear and nonlinear). Each chapter contains worked examples with several problems at the end; answers to these problems and hints on how to solve them are found at the back of the book. Students and professionals in mathematics, science, and engineering will find this book indispensable for developing a fundamental understanding of how to use invariant one-parameter group methods to solve differential equations.

Book Description
Volume 2 offers a unique blend of classical results of Sophus Lie with new, modern developments and numerous applications which span a period of more than 100 years. As a result, this reference is up to date, with the latest information on the group theoretic methods used frequently in mathematical physics and engineering. Volume 2 is divided into three parts. Part A focuses on relevant definitions, main algorithms, group classification schemes for partial differential equations, and multifaceted possibilities offered by Lie group theoretic philosophy. Part B contains the group analysis of a variety of mathematical models for diverse natural phenomena. It tabulates symmetry groups and solutions for linear equations of mathematical physics, classical field theory, viscous and non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layer problems, Earth sciences, elasticity, plasticity, plasma theory (Vlasov-Maxwell equations), and nonlinear optics and acoustics. Part C offers an English translation of Sophus Lie's fundamental paper on the group classification and invariant solutions of linear second-order equations with two independent variables. This will serve as a concise, practical guide to the group analysis of partial differential equations.

Linear Differential Equations and Group Theory from Riemann to Poincare

Linear Differential Equations and Group Theory from Riemann to Poincare PDF Author: Jeremy Gray
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 0817647732
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 357

Book Description
This book is a study of how a particular vision of the unity of mathematics, often called geometric function theory, was created in the 19th century. The central focus is on the convergence of three mathematical topics: the hypergeometric and related linear differential equations, group theory, and on-Euclidean geometry. The text for this second edition has been greatly expanded and revised, and the existing appendices enriched. The exercises have been retained, making it possible to use the book as a companion to mathematics courses at the graduate level.

Applications of Group-Theoretical Methods in Hydrodynamics

Applications of Group-Theoretical Methods in Hydrodynamics PDF Author: V.K. Andreev
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780792352150
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 966

Book Description
It was long ago that group analysis of differential equations became a powerful tool for studying nonlinear equations and boundary value problems. This analysis was especially fruitful in application to the basic equations of mechanics and physics because the invariance principles are already involved in their derivation. It is in no way a coincidence that the equations of hydrodynamics served as the first object for applying the new ideas and methods of group analysis which were developed by 1. V. Ovsyannikov and his school. The authors rank themselves as disciples of the school. The present monograph deals mainly with group-theoretic classification of the equations of hydrodynamics in the presence of planar and rotational symmetry and also with construction of exact solutions and their physical interpretation. It is worth noting that the concept of exact solution to a differential equation is not defined rigorously; different authors understand it in different ways. The concept of exact solution expands along with the progress of mathematics (solu tions in elementary functions, in quadratures, and in special functions; solutions in the form of convergent series with effectively computable terms; solutions whose searching reduces to integrating ordinary differential equations; etc. ). We consider it justifiable to enrich the set of exact solutions with rank one and rank two in variant and partially invariant solutions to the equations of hydrodynamics.
