Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment

Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment PDF Author: Maurizio Polemio
Publisher: MDPI
ISBN: 3039211978
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
This Special Issue presents the work of 30 scientists from 11 countries. It confirms that the impacts of global change, resulting from both climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure, are huge on worldwide coastal areas (and critically so on some islands in the Pacific Ocean), with highly negative effects on coastal groundwater resources, which are widely affected by seawater intrusion. Some improved research methods are proposed in the contributions: using innovative hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical monitoring; assessing impacts of the changing environment on the coastal groundwater resources in terms of quantity and quality; and using modelling, especially to improve management approaches. The scientific research needed to face these challenges must continue to be deployed by different approaches based on the monitoring, modelling and management of groundwater resources. Novel and more efficient methods must be developed to keep up with the accelerating pace of global change.

Fundamentals of Groundwater

Fundamentals of Groundwater PDF Author: Franklin W. Schwartz
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119820138
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 516

Book Description
A thoroughly updated classic on the fundamentals of groundwater The second edition of Fundamentals of Groundwater delivers an expert discussion of the fundamentals of groundwater in the hydrologic cycle and applications to contemporary problems in hydrogeology. The theme of the book is groundwater, broadly defined, and it covers the theory and practice of groundwater—from basic principles of physical and chemical hydrogeology to their application in traditional and emerging areas of practice. This new edition contains extensive revisions, including new discussions of human impacts on aquifers, and strategies and concepts for sustainable development of groundwater. It also covers the theory of groundwater flow—including concepts of hydraulic head and the Darcy equation—and ground water/surface water interactions, as well as geochemistry and contamination. Readers will also find A thorough introduction to the techniques of water resource investigations and regional groundwater flow Comprehensive explorations of groundwater chemistry and its applications in regional characterization and assessments of health impacts Practical discussions of groundwater contamination and water sustainability more generally Fulsome treatments of newly emerged contaminants, like PFAS, pathogens, agricultural contaminants, methane, arsenic, uranium, and redox processes Perfect for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in hydrogeology, groundwater, geoscience, applied geoscience, and groundwater and contaminant processes, Fundamentals of Groundwater also benefits environmental consultants, geochemists, engineers, and geologists.

Groundwater Contamination in Coastal Aquifers

Groundwater Contamination in Coastal Aquifers PDF Author: Senapathi Venkatramanan
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323859747
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
Groundwater Contamination in Coastal Aquifers: Assessment and Management first describes groundwater contamination in coastal aquifers and then delves into specific topics surrounding various hydrogeochemical processes. Next, the book covers case studies of groundwater quality assessment using recent techniques, explains the various pollutants and contaminants in coastal aquifers, and covers management and remediation methods to control contamination in coastal aquifers. This key reference encompasses various topics in broader perspectives on groundwater contamination in coastal aquifers, providing a significant contribution to the field of hydrogeology. Presents global case studies that show the reader how this issue is affecting sites around the world Includes a remediation plan that solves problems surrounding the management of groundwater, water treatment techniques, and the management of available groundwater resources Provides advanced techniques that can be applied and used as methodologies for solving groundwater issues

Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition

Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition PDF Author: Neven Kresic
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849333484
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 836

Book Description
Coupling the basics of hygrogeology with analytical and numerical modeling methods, Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition provides detailed coverage of both theory and practice. Written by a leading hydrogeologist who has consulted for industry and environmental agencies and taught at major universities around the world, this unique book fills a gap in the groundwater hydrogeology literature. With more than 40 real-world examples, the book is a source for clear, easy-to-understand, and step-by-step quantitative groundwater evaluation and contaminant fate and transport analysis, from basic laboratory determination to complex analytical calculations and computer modeling. It provides more than 400 drawings, graphs, and photographs, and a variety of useful tables of all key groundwater parameters, as well as lucid, straightforward answers to common hydrogeological problems. Reflecting nearly ten years of new scholarship since the publication of the bestselling first edition, this second edition is wider in focus with added and updated examples, figures, and problems, yet still provides information in the author's trademark, user-friendly style. No other book offers such carefully selected examples and clear, elegantly explained solutions. The inclusion of step-by-step solutions to real problems builds a knowledge base for understanding and solving groundwater issues.

Production, Use, and Sustainability of Groundwater

Production, Use, and Sustainability of Groundwater PDF Author: Charles A. Job
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0429557264
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 411

Book Description
Groundwater is becoming increasingly scarce while the demand for water continues to grow at a global scale. Understanding groundwater resources and their sustainable management is imperative for the future of groundwater use, conservation and protection. This revised and updated two-volume set, focused on sustainability, covers the economic values of groundwater production and use, including micro- and macroeconomic factors, groundwater markets, economic evaluation tools, climate change, transboundary issues and policy evaluation. It explores numerous applications and describes ways to evaluate the economics of groundwater use in the context of the larger ecosystem and the natural capital it provides. FEATURES OF THIS VOLUME Includes an important new chapter on groundwater sustainability management Addresses new examples of groundwater use that are applicable at both the local and international levels Provides the foundation for policy, program and project analysis for all major uses of groundwater Updates groundwater use data along with explanations of major production costs and use benefits Gives a new perspective on users’ competition for the subsurface environment Production, Use, and Sustainability of Groundwater, Second Edition, the first volume of the two-volume set Groundwater Economics, is a must-have for any professional or student who needs to understand, evaluate and manage water resources from a range of production and use perspectives affecting groundwater resource sustainability.
