Book Description
Excerpt from Grievances From Ireland, Vol. 2: June, 1906 We are the best friends of Mr. Bryce when we frankly tell him that the patience of the people has been sadly taxed, and is well nigh exhausted, and that we cannot be responsible if there is in the future any interrup tion of the peaceful state'of things that now prevails in the West of Ireland. (loud cheers.) If there is to be no acceleration of the work of the Board. Then let Mr. Bryce and those associated with him understand that those who find themselves at this moment at the head of the people will be constrained to have no further responsi bility for maintaining peace and order, and that if peace and order are interfered with in future the blame will lie largely on those gentle men responsible for the dilatoriness with which the work of the Congested Districts Board is now being done. Irish History of Civilization, Volume 2

Irish History of Civilization, Volume 2 PDF Author: Don Akenson
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773572848
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 709

Book Description
In a sprawling chronicle of civilization through Irish eyes, Akenson takes us from St Patrick to Woodie Guthrie, from Constantine to John F. Kennedy, from India to the Australian outback. In two volumes of masterful storytelling he creates ironic, playful, and acerbic historical miniatures - a quixotic series of reconstructions woven into a helix in which the same historical figures reappear in radically different contexts as their narratives intersect with the larger picture.

The Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 2, 1550–1730

The Cambridge History of Ireland: Volume 2, 1550–1730 PDF Author: Jane Ohlmeyer
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1108592279
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 810

Book Description
This volume offers fresh perspectives on the political, military, religious, social, cultural, intellectual, economic, and environmental history of early modern Ireland and situates these discussions in global and comparative contexts. The opening chapters focus on 'Politics' and 'Religion and War' and offer a chronological narrative, informed by the re-interpretation of new archives. The remaining chapters are more thematic, with chapters on 'Society', 'Culture', and 'Economy and Environment', and often respond to wider methodologies and historiographical debates. Interdisciplinary cross-pollination - between, on the one hand, history and, on the other, disciplines like anthropology, archaeology, geography, computer science, literature and gender and environmental studies - informs many of the chapters. The volume offers a range of new departures by a generation of scholars who explain in a refreshing and accessible manner how and why people acted as they did in the transformative and tumultuous years between 1550 and 1730.

Essential Writings Volume 2

Essential Writings Volume 2 PDF Author: William Cobbett
Publisher: Jazzybee Verlag
ISBN: 3849675874
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 430

Book Description
William Cobbett was an English journalist and member of parliament, who was born in Farnham, Surrey. He believed that reforming Parliament and abolishing the rotten boroughs would help to end the poverty of farm labourers, and he attacked the borough-mongers, sinecurists and "tax-eaters" relentlessly. Through the seeming contradictions in Cobbett's life, his opposition to authority stayed constant. He wrote many polemics, on subjects from political reform to religion. This is volume two out of four of his most essential writings, covering the years 1805 to 1809.
